    Metal Bandsaw Restoration

Bearing King, Bearing Boys and Steel City Bearings all sell standardised pulley and belt ranges too, I would assume that pretty much any bearing factor would do so. If you need a power transmission component which is somehow nonstandard HPC Gears are hands down the best commercial supplier I've...

Bifold Door Installation - Fully finished Vs In-Situ Build

Thanks everyone! I'm now fully convinced on building it as a fully finished unit, and fitting it last now. Much better shout. Hadn't considered using foam, was planning to hew/plane packers from scrap wood, screw in place then fill the remaining gaps with mortar before fitting the architrave...

    Need help improving Shop lighting

I started out on exactly the same page as you, aiming for around 1000 Lux illumination using LED battens, and have been pleasantly surprised by how much proper levels of illumination have improved my enjoyment and productivity; Though personally went for 4000k temperature because I find it...

    Old duffers rebellion.

That idiom doesn't make any sense in that context. You were surely aware that doing that would feed the flames of controversy in this thread, which is exactly why you used vague wording and added no commentary. That would have given you good plausible deniability (or allowed you to go "Huh I...

    Need help improving Shop lighting

Doing lighting design well is difficult, but I've just been through this as part of refitting my workshop and can probably offer some pointers later from what I've learned; although have to cook lunch right now so may be a few hours

    Old duffers rebellion.

I am a person who interpreted his words successfully and didn't feel the need to ask questions with answers which are self evident from the information provided in those words having done so. I of course don't feel it quite as strongly as he does, because I'm somewhat removed from the realities...

I think he's made it very clear that he considers that a question was carefully selected, in bad faith to ensure the FOI outcome would, support an argument which when correctly presented in with proper contextualisation is clearly invalid.

Using washing machine motors for workshop machines

No need to apologise, I've just learned something quite interesting about central heating round the world... And your suggestion would work perfectly, as a source of cheap used ⅓-¾ h.p. induction motors.

Using washing machine motors for workshop machines

I'm assuming your furnace heats the air itself directly to be pushed through the house in ducts as opposed to heating a circulating volume of water for radiators? A concept which is somewhat alien here in the UK. Otherwise I'm struggling to grasp how it would need forced air, given Hoval in the...

Using washing machine motors for workshop machines

I've seen them used very successfully by several friends as a cheap, speed controllable alternative to paying for a Induction Motor and VFD, but it did involve a bit of surgery on the motor, or using an Arduino and some breakout boards to control the motor's original circuitry... AC universal...

None quite as thorough or enterprising as England has been though... Despite our lack of Roman organisation, Norman culture or Viking ferocity. If you're just making lists on wax tablets, playing the lute, or roaring as your beard lofts majestically in the breeze all day, then you're bound to...

    Old duffers rebellion.

The concept of English capitalisation probably just needed a rest... If you speak to the Scots, Welsh, Irish, Indians or Africans they'll tell you the English have been capitalising on things for centuries, that's gotta be hard work.

Running DC starter motors from welding plant.

Slow, wet aeroplanes with stubby wings and a solid steel canopy for the pilots to not see out of. :P

The only part of Rolls-Royce I've ever dealt with refers to themselves purely as "Submarines", no R-R (and no starter motor necessary, come to it...).

This is a good point, there are a lot of RR engines kicking about in preservation too, so it's just a case of finding the right place to advertise them. Edit: By contrast, if they're off the much more numerous Diesel engines RR built in Shrewsbury, then there's dozens of easily identifiable...

This puts the Virus into the shadows

Agreed! York has been experimenting with putting physically separated cycle lanes round the outside of roundabouts using two different designs, one from Amsterdam and one from Utrecht. Both which facilitate the approach you're talking about but with a big kerb to discourage traffic getting too...

I mean I'd depends if it's a Range Rover, or one of the modern monstrosities which looks indistinguishable from every other car in the JLR lineup... You'd get a pass for aesthetic and historical reasons if it's original...

This puts the Virus into the shadows

Whilst I was at Uni I commuted about 7000 miles total by bike over 5 years without any issues, but in a rural area and a small low traffic city; only had issues once I ended up in a much bigger city with dense but fast moving traffic. So I'm not sure how much luck has to do with it, good...
