    History Lesson

Most probably, I remember commenting somewhere in the past, that most of the modern workplace benches I've seen tend towards the "Joiners Bench" and incorporate lots of re-purposed materials that are readily available there.

That is a really really cool technique, I did not see where it was going at first!

Getting my bandsaw to cut straight

Is the not blade sharp? Is the blade tensioned incorrectly? Are you attempting to cut a relatively deep section with a blade which has small teeth/gullets? Are you feeding too fast? If you're answering yes to any of those, then changing that will go a long way towards improving things. Edited...

    Mortise Walls Rough or Smooth?

First off I'm perfectly calm, and for full disclosure I've also been at a wake for most of the day, where a great deal of alcohol was served (and consumed), so perhaps I'm even more tactless and direct than usual... Moving swiftly onward; as ever, you've missed the point, it's easier to keep a...

    Mortise Walls Rough or Smooth?

Just to be clear, I'm not interested what books say or who was trained by who and does what... In a subject as diverse and confused as woodworking, the "appeal to authority" is even more fallacious than it would normally be. Lock mortices are much like the large mortices worked in framing...

Tutorials on Frame and Panel (with Mouldings) by Hand?

This is likelu a reflection of: The fact that relatively few people get to see it up close or watch all that's involved with it.The fact that it lacks immediate visual appeal. Being totally inaccessable to the average hobbyist. On that last point, furniture is pretty accesible in terms of size...

    Best chisel ever used

Stanley "unbreakable" black and yellow resin handled chisel, not sure what type, i have a pair ground into skews (one in each direction). Absolutely wouldn't be without them.

    Mortise Walls Rough or Smooth?

Really? You really want to advocate drilling out small mortices? if you need a 1" mortice, then it makes sense, but 3/8" or 1/4" and it becomes a stuggle to keep the bids straight (and get the depths right) without a drill press costing more than buying a mortice chisel would, and certainly more...

Tutorials on Frame and Panel (with Mouldings) by Hand?

Most of that post was aimed at Woodbrain's comment, not yours (you tend to be relatively measured, and are also a joiner yourself). I've seen some extremely complicated shuttering work, lots of intersecting curved surfaces; and it invariably looks all a bit ramshackle on the outside, but once...

Tutorials on Frame and Panel (with Mouldings) by Hand?

Thing is, you've picked a very demanding furniture project (in fact it's more like high-class internal joinery than just "furniture"), and a normal window so it's an apples to eggs comparison... The branch of work is not directly related to skill or difficulty, You can get horrendously complex...

    The Fruits of Ebay.

Nothing to indicate there was ever a handle (there is a nasty mark where it appears that someone either went to start boring into it, or used it as a backstop to bore a hole in something else with an auger, but that looks to have happened a long time ago, probably before my lifetime) and the...

In this case BS 644:2008 Timber Windows would be a good starter for ten... there are at least half a dozen BS and EN standards that would be relevant.

    The Fruits of Ebay.

I think you misunderstand my intent there... Often someone states 'if thats how they used to do it, why do you never see it on old tools...' I'm just noting that you do, even on quite fine ones; the way I sharpen is roughly the same as you, (for most tools).

    The Fruits of Ebay.

In a simmilar vein to the carboot threads; I went to a party recently and someone, in their intoxicated widsom suggested [slurring somewhat] that everyone should whip out their smartphones and make an ebay bid on something for 99p... I chose to bid on a number of items and here they are...

    wadkin bandsaw restoration

I've only ever come into contact with the little (8" and 12" under guides) Robinson resaws, there are quite a lot still in day to day use at small timber merchants and they invariably have a similar rich patina and kind of elegant appearence... I'm around big Stenners all day (dating from...

    wadkin bandsaw restoration

Its 14"under guides the blade length marks the saw out as a DR30 (there's also a 36 with 18.5" ). For its class of machine, it really is a bit of a beast! Being a narrow band saw,the practical resaw capacity may well be less; the reason the saw you were talking about had such a wide...

If that's in reference to my post then, then I must applogise for a post that's about as clear as mud (but makes total sense in my head). I'll try to draw what I mean and post it, not sure if I'll have a chance tonight.
