    Reverse dovetail planes

Thats the sketch* of what I was thinking of, an off kilter chisel plane attached to a guide block which it can slide up and down on via two slots; with the block also able to ride against a guide batten. One would need to make two passes in opposite directions (or with a matched pair to avoid...

    Reverse dovetail planes

Does there exist a plane designed for cutting the 'pin' side of a sliding dovetail? I know traditionally one cuts one using a tenon or carcase saw, router plane and chisel; but whilst pondering sliding dovetails today I started to realise that whilst complicated, and essentially redundant...

Wooden Handles...Plastic Handles...but which is best...?

I to throw a spanner in the works I can't pick sides here, I really like the wooden "carver" style handles, but my favourite chisels to use are the red acrylic handled footprint chisels, i find the rounded off trapizoid shape very comfortable, and gives excellent control especially their...

    Heat Treated Timber

Accoya is a different process, to achieve the same changes. To remove they hygoscopic (water accepting) hydroxyl (alcohol) groups in cellulose, they pressure treat the wood with an acetylating agent to replace the alcohol group with an acetate group, using the same chemical reactiom as was used...

    Footprint Tools

I believe Atkinson Walker is an independent family firm (though they're within 100yds of each other, and on a direct route from my flat to The Fat Cat) different product, different market; same commitment to sheffield manufacture and Same excellent products and attention to detail, when I was...

How to make this dado rail with a router table?

Cut the beading with a beading cutter in a multi-plane, then do the Ovolo at each edge on the router table. For a relatively small bead like that the beading plane will take a matter of minutes, far quicker than mucking about trying to force a router to do the work of a spindle moulder, or...

    Footprint Tools

I've seen them online for £42-£47, as compared to flinn's cheapest starting at £62. They also look identical to my 22 year old footprint saws, which look identical to some of the flinn models, so its anyones guess if they're "the same" and if they're made in house or not.

    Footprint Tools

Appear to be back producing woodworking tools, though only a rationalised fraction of their former range. I remember them going into liquidation and restarting based on the strength of their pipe grips, line pins and bricklayers tools, but they seemed to have let the woodworking tools go. Back...

    Rust Mitigation/Prevention

I wouldn't trust it to be cool enough, the thermostat, ATM they're in sealed in a plastic box about 2 ft from a radiator, on laths with tubs of Calcium Chloride (the stuff used in chemical dehumidifiers) under them. I'm with you on that, most of them had several generations of patina on them...

    Rust Mitigation/Prevention

Generally they either remove the rust (chelating agents like mollases and EDTA & dilute solutions of organic acids like acetic, citric and formic), or remove both rust and metal (mineral acids like hydrochloric and nitric). I can see the sense in your argument for some of the less rusty items...

    Rust Mitigation/Prevention

In the main their value is in their use, to me... There are a few rare/unusual items in there which warrant special attention, along with a few tools left to me by my great grandfather and the tools my grandfather gave me to start me off, which whilst not necessarily rare, are immensely valuble...

    Rust Mitigation/Prevention

Hi All, I've been away from the forum/woodwork/home for well over 18 months now (I'm employed by an offshore oilfield services company); I left all my tools wrapped up in oiled canvas, boxed in one of my parents spare bedrooms, along with adissassembled (portable) ELU Planer/Thicknesser. At...

Anyone recommend a saw doctor in the NE of England?

Thinking of it there's Dolphin Tooling in Ferryhill, Co. Durham who won't be a million miles from you.

    Dewalt Radial Arm Saw

I would tend to sit somewhere between the two camps when it comes to ripping on an RAS; None of the failure modes that cause an RAS to kick back are specific to the RAS, and are common to all circular saws, thus it's not inherrently unsafe if the machine is properly guarded, well maintained, the...

Anyone recommend a saw doctor in the NE of England?

Ernest Bennet are excellent saw doctors, they do a lot of work for larger mills where they collect and deliver a van load of tooling, in this vein they may well have a regular run which passes near to you. The website is a bit pants now, probably best ringing to ask.

How to put a moulding around a curve by hand?

Scratchstock is one option... Sash router would work if it's one of the mouldings used in window construction... Otherwise, carving tools and specialized planes (with sole compassed in one or both directions), comparing frequently to a profile...

Peter Sefton's Open Day - Last Saturday

Aye, Well... If the felder/hammer blocks are set up like i think they are (i.e. like everyone elses spiral blocks) then you're not actually getting a spiral cutting edge, the edge remains perpendicular to the feed direction, the only real difference to a normal block setup is that you're only...

Wood planing in Norwich or nearby.

To an extent... A very long (lets say 6.6m) board is a nightmare to handle, and can have huge disortions in it, so planing that up isn't a good plan; cut it down to make some 750mm components, and they'll each have a small distortion to remove and be a good size to handle. Great! Now consider...
