Wood recycling in the UK is quite well developed, indeed for solid wood in good condition you'll be paid a rebate for. Good quality material is either sold for reuse or chipped to make OSB and Wood Flour for MDF, shavings of the same quality are sold for Pet Bedding and making Chip-board...

    New hand planes?

I'm curious about point 4, what can you tell from the spark colour about composition? I get the principle of how that would work from having used AAS and OES instruments, but the faint colour change from ±0.25% of a given metal is surely to subtle to distinguish by eye. As far as point 1 goes I...

    Whats this?

I'd be shocked if that's asbestos bearing... Asbestos is horrid stuff, don't get me wrong... But, in the bonded forms still prevalent today it's comparatively harmless, the woven or spun pipe-lagging of yesteryear was a lot more likely to cause a noticeable effect with a short exposure, and...

As much as anything, taste has changed. The lavish baroque feel of 17th and 18th century furniture slowly faded from fashion to the altogether less objectionably ostentatious but still artfully detailed feel of the more accomplished arts and crafts work, and the modernist designers took cues...

Looking for employment as a cabinet maker?

Depending what you're looking for you could directly approach the Edward Barnsley Workshop to see if any of their apprentices will be seeking employment at the end of their time there and would like to move to the lake district... My understanding is that the Edward Barnsley Foundation exists...

    New hand planes?

You're going to want to wait for a dry spell before lapping those soles... At least you dont want to go full on weight-weanie and use Magnesium, then you'd really have fun!

    Making queen-anne legs?

I probably won't put a bun on the food of this proto, but that gives me time to practice turning the Buns (I think I'm up to this task, but I know I'm not up to carving a ball and Claw foot). Went to start bandsawing last night on the bigger gutsier bandsaw, and the blade had almost no teeth...

    New hand planes?

Ductile does mean the plane is tougher...but toughness and hardness tend to be inversely proportional. I can't help wondering if moving from cast iron to cast steel would be an actual advance... Traditionally steel is rather harder to cast and machine, so iron was preferred if at all...

    New hand planes?

Indeed, but in Victorian times the labour of skilled man such as a patternmaker or moulder was much less than the cost of a good quality steel or iron, nor was it easy to generate and contain sufficient energy to prepare big secondary melts of metal for casting. Fast forward to 2015 and we've...

    Remake of Preston scratch stock

The weird bit for me was the UPS Express shipping (takes 1 week) was cheaper than the USPS Surface Mail rate (takes 8 weeks)... Win-Win really, but you wouldn't think it would be so.

    Remake of Preston scratch stock

Shipping was just shy of $20, the stock and blades $60... That's about £54, tax will be about another £10, for a rough total of £65 ish

    Making queen-anne legs?

I've got 4"*4"*22" blank of laminated redwood planed up and morticed, a ply template drawn, bandsawn and sanded, and I think I'm ready to give it a try... However from experience with the template I'm not 100% it has a tight enough turn with the current blade.

    Making queen-anne legs?

Thanks Custard, that's very useful information. I'm not sure I'd describe myself reasonably competent, but I'll consider that to be my new status in the woodworking world if I'm actually able to do this successfully... Indeed I've seen a much more consistent output when working on unfamiliar...

    Making queen-anne legs?

Apparently the originals have been damaged beyond repair, the insurer sent a specialist furniture repairer to take a look who felt it wouldn't be feasible to repair the damage (physical as well as water apparently), which is particularly irritating from a historical point of view as well as a...

    Making queen-anne legs?

My family in Carlisle has been hit hard by flooding, and my grandmother in particular has lost all of her furniture. Against that backdrop I've been approached by members of the family to ask if I could make similar pieces to replace some of the more central pieces. The major issue I have with...

    New, with a skew...

I'll get photos next time I'm in, but I've figured out the issue by looking at pictures of the stock DML... The two toolrests with the lathe are both salvaged from other lathes, and aren't as tall as the stock record power toolrest.

    New hand planes?

I actually suspect the true issue is volume these days. With modern understanding and modeling of casting stresses, the improvement in "near net shape" casting of increasingly large, complex items and CNC machining centres where you can actually get the machine to insert and remove the...

    New, with a skew...

The lathe is a Record Power DML36, the toolrest only has about 3" of post, I think I'd been sawn off to allow it to sit lower (It's been bolted onto a cabinet, which would foul the rest if set low down), looks like I'll have to buy a new one with the requisite height). I'd have liked a roughing...

    New, with a skew...

Hi all, I've had access to a lathe for a while now, and kept meaning to do something on it just to get confident turning spindles for furniture... Anyway I decided that as so much fuss is made about skews being evil, I should learn with one of those and have done with it. The two issues I'm...

    Remake of Preston scratch stock

I already have... The combination of me thinking 'I really must make a scratch stock', seeing this thread and the Weak dollar and/or Strong pound made it inevitable that I would.
