    **** Carving Gouges

Does anyone have experience of these? I have a basic set of Henry Taylor tools, which are excellent but don't quite cover my needs carving-wise... The **** tools are also made by Henry Taylor but sell for €24 a piece, rather than £35, other than the German versus English tax systems is there a...

    Woodworking, Aberystwyth?

If you do that regularly, get a Froe... I received one in this years SS and it's a revolutionary improvement over scoring the log with a hatchet and then using wedges and a 7kg sledge hammer. If you find yourself needing to buy hardwoods in longer lengths or sectional sizes than you can get for...

    Making queen-anne legs?

I'll do that, I'm still waiting on a quote for having the 17' beam of Meranti I've been offered machined, so I have plenty of time to practice and perfect before I feel compelled to start 'for real'. I shaped a spoon foot on a pad first, then decided to see if I could carve a ball and claw out...

    Making queen-anne legs?

Thank you, predictably as the maker I'm not quite happy with it. I had some issues with the PAR I laminated my blank from being undersize, and thus not properly fitting my template, so I had to use the template as a French curve to draw the cut lines, causing some asymmetry which is not too...

    Making queen-anne legs?

Just managed to upload some WIP photos. Be gentle with the constructive criticism, I'm not very experienced at carving.

    Making queen-anne legs?

I've now shaped a reasonably nice leg, thanks to all the advice given. Then contrary to what might be seen as advisable, embarked on carving a ball and claw foot, which is not as hard as I expected, which still makes it bloody difficult! I think I'll be able to produce one ball and claw foot...

    Shoulder Plane Question

I'd be inclined to agree there, having done more or less the same operation as Custard is talking about literally thousands of times on a production cell that prepared windows for glazing (unfortunately the very high spec, high r-value panes they used needed to fit perfectly flat to actually...

How do you store your planes and other hand tools?

I believe Ken Hawley has the most ingenious solution... Amass so many tools and documents that you can persuade a university and a museum to team up and give you a large warehouse and gallery in which to store them all, due to their historical merit.

What tool did you buy today?

I've just won a load of "turning tools" on Ebay, there are several which are definitely turning tools, but a number appear to be outcannel paring/scribing gouges with boxwood "carver" handles. Either would be useful...

    Saw and Chisel advice

I think you'd be right, my take was that pushing the big, aggressive teeth smoothly was asking a little bit much... But it shows how people's physiques and general co-ordination will shape their preferences, in a way that's real to them but useless as advice to someone else. In terms of...

Alternative to dovetail on drawer box?

I remembered (whilst drinking bitter and reading a book by Peter Korn in my hotel) that the Maker of the fluted furniture I mentioned was Alan Peters, of the same parish as Custard*... *that is, trained by the Edward Barnsley workshop

    Saw and Chisel advice

Personally preference is a massive thing however, and instant... I recently took my partner into the workshop to learn some basic skills (at her request), she couldn't make my prized Crosscut Tennon Saw work for her for love nor money, but given a sash saw filed with finer rip teeth and a more...

    Wood identification

I'd say so, the way my dad taught me was to make an educated guess based on appearance then compare it with photographic (micrographic?) references using a 10× lens to view a smoothly cut piece of end grain... I'm still a bit pants at it, but he can tell you what individual species a piece of...

    Woodworking, Aberystwyth?

Given you live about 2½ hours from anywhere else, (a mild exaggeration, but from my many journeys through the welsh interior, not too far off the mark) I'd call that a result! All joking aside, when I lived in Bangor, I used to drive down the A470 fair regular, and ended up buying quite a lot...

Alternative to dovetail on drawer box?

Went to see it after work (The Fitzwilliam is very conveniently situated at a walking distance of approximately one bowl of pipe tobbaco from the university's Chemistry Dept)... There is a lot more to it up close and personal Tha meets the eye in photographs... The curator was quite bemused at...

    OSB for Kitchen Unit Doors??

We have a promotional statuette from one of the Canadian OSB manufacturers at home, It's been cut and shaped from OSB, sanded to within an inch of its life and lacquered and polished to a mirror sheen... Looks absolutely stunning, has no right to, but does.

Alternative to dovetail on drawer box?

As luck would have it... I'm in Cambridge with work the next couple of days, so I'll try to and go look in person if time allows Harsh though my previous post could have sounded, It seemed pretty clear that the photographs on the site you linked looked like they (or my phone screen) couldn't do...

    quality workwear

Thanks for that mention, my carhaart bib & braces have begun to shrink to the point I'll have to loose weight (also a thing I need to do) to continue fitting them. The bib doesn't look like it wraps fully round the body, do you still find it provides a reasonable barrier to the ingress of...

    Pressure shoe/Shaw guard for re-sawing

What I'm taking away from this is that I should build a sturdy fence to support the boards and try it a bit more, then try it and with any luck that should feel adequate to controllwithout side pressure from an additional fence or guide. Rodders, I'd like to build or buy (all things considered...
