Surely the issue is the unnecessary stratification of the minimum wage... How is an unskilled 25 year old worth any more than an unskilled 18 year old or 21 year old, equal work deserves equal pay! Equally a minimum wage for apprentices taken on before the age of 19 less than half the minimum...

What tool is this I'm describing...

Try putting it on a long buy it now listing on ebay at around £35-40 per complete unit (or as a job lot at ~¾ that price), listing "SCM, Wadkin, Weinig, Robinson" in the title would help get more views from the right kind of buyer. If that fails speak to a reputable dealer in woodworking...

    City and Guilds Furniture

In much the same vein, the builders merchants & timber trades are largely developing internal or co-operative training programmes for staff, either as customised programmes leading to NVQ's with local colleges or by becoming validated as an awarding body in their own right to deliver specific...

    Forging Ahead...

In this respect using an oxy-mapp torch and ceramic "hearth" was a major advantage for me as an inexperienced person, as I had a lot of control over the direction and envelope of the heating, compared to a conventional hearth or a furnace. Too right, it doesn't look simple anymore!

CheshireChappy: it has two advantages: it's much cheaper and I get exactly the sweep and bend I needed. It's a good learning experience too, and I never pass up the chance to do something new.

    Forging Ahead...

Following from the chisels and planes you've made thread... I finally reached a point where lack of a back-bent chisel was stalling my table build to the point that I needed to do something about it. One duplicate firmer chisel later... Full Gallery. Turned out to be relatively easy to...

Poll Time - Success with Planes or Chisels You've Made

I've re-made existing chisels into carving tools, often when I have an oversupply of chisels and a need an unusual carving tool. They're generally very good for the intended purpose, but as it was done to make tools I couldn't afford, I'll never know if I could by better, in any case I don't...

NVR switch w/overload protection for 1¼ hp motor.

Thanks mark, you've just confirmed what I was starting to suspect after going through the various electrical factors websites and reading some wiring instructions for various products: "NVR" ≈ DOL == suitable Contactor, NO & NC pushbuttons in convenient enclosure. Now to search properly...

NVR switch w/overload protection for 1¼ hp motor.

I recently got a Dewalt 1201 off another forumite with a couple of declared faults, I've fixed all the mechanical bits, and am now about to re-wire the switchgear. We're discussing the potential of it being built into a bench, so my intention is to replace the arm mounted NVR with a wall...

    Composite decking

I was responsible for cutting and mounting POS displays of the trex decking when it first came to the UK. My impressions were: the dust is particularly fine, messy and unpleasant, though not actually any more hazardous than normal; it's somewhat more flexible than wood of a similar section; it...

    milling machine

There's a second hand engineering tools shop on Sheff that does lots of cheap good tooling; tool holding is what I'm struggling to get affordably (because predictably I can't get the tooling I want both cheap and in convenient shank sizes) , I now have drawings of the R8 taper, so am looking at...

Advice on finding tools for my fly press

I'm stalled with making my own press tooling at the moment as I need to make an endmill holder, to hold an endmill to make the punch.* It's actually pretty simple to make punch tooling with an open die once you get your head round it, and accept heat treating die steel is a definite send out...

I have access to a Bridgeport, if you can tell me what you need done I'll figure out if we have the tooling required.

    Apprenticeships

On the plus side, as a real adult (i.e. over 21) you're entitled to the full minimum wage even as an apprentice, unfortunately that also means there is no funding for the training, so you'd have to really impress a prospective employer to get an offer of a job and college course. If I was you...

any idea how I can make something like this?

It's done a reasonably good job of that Aztec sun, achieving the sharp corners by using a v-shaped bit and bringing the z-axis up to make it finer, very clever and replicates the effect of a relief carving done with just a v-tool and skew quite nicely. But, the Islamic carvings shown have the...

    Disston

It's about 4.5 tonnes (unsure how many tons). But, considering that Disston was the biggest game in town, at a time when America (and it's Asian trading partners) were rapidly urbanising, mainly in timber or timber frame buildings, it's not that suprising at all. Reading on Sheffield Forum...

any idea how I can make something like this?

I'd have thought a router would struggle with that level of detail. Laser cut from a thinish (5-8mm) veneer and glue to substrate would be my approach.

    Disston

Not sure what you're getting at, the idea of good tools being a niche market is pretty modern. Not so long ago I posted a (somewhat sardonic in tone) account for why we can't have good cheap planes anymore... Because the world doesn't buy enough hand-tools, the likes of makita, dewalt and even...

What did you do in your workshop today ?

Yesterday I moved my surface grinder into the workshop finally, today I (jointly) took down an ancient and redundant sprinkler system. 25m of 4" steel pipe and another 30m of 2¼" steel pipe cut down. Between three of us it took from 11am till 5pm. We went through three 4" and one 10" cutting...
