    Drummond B lathe

This is also generally the arrangement used on larger metal lathes where the headstock and bed are part of a single casting, or the mass of the headstock is simply too large for moving it to be a sensible design. But because of the issue highlighted by Trevanion, this does mean that workpieces...

Advice about material for leatherworking pricking iron

If you're purchasing from a supplier or eBay, grade EN8/C45/1045 carbon steel will do what you want, if you: - Shape it to approximately the right shape, - Harden it by heating with a blow torch to cherry red, then quenching in cold cooking oil (beware there will be smoke and/or flame), -...

Door 1 of 3 to replace my garage door, panel dry-fitted, sans paint. Detail shot of the T&GV fit-up And the frame after glue up but before being tidied up. Made this one entirely using hand tools, which is my preferred way of working. However for variety I'm planning to do the...

    Noise levels in my workshop

Wouldn't that just be ear-plugs? I found that the disposible foam type to be effective if inserted correctly when I worked in noisy industrial environments. But they're not generally available with the same level of protection as the bigger ear defenders (Peltor Optime III and the like) so...

    Metalworking Forums

I like Model Engineer, but find it can have a bit of an odd atmosphere, there's clearly a lot of very knowledgeable people on there, who are generally nice and helpful, but as someone outside the model engineering fraternity it can feel a bit stuffy sometimes.

    Metalworking Forums

If you could only visit one metalworking forum, it would have to be Practical Machinist. https://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/ Somewhat USA-centric but has a decent international user base, and a lot of the very detailed knowledgeable contributions of the type that make UKWorkshop so great to...

    Treating exterior oak

If you're really committed to having a coating, you could try using multiple coats of something like kreidezeit base oil, which is used for mixing linseed oil paints and varnishes, and will form a genuine coating, which is (somewhat) capable of accomodating the natural movement of wood (any...

Annular Ring Shank vs. Clenched Cut Clasp - Ledged, Braced and Framed Doors

In the middle of doing a set of bifold garage doors, the bottom ⅔ of which is Ledged, Braced and Framed, with a doubled glazed light at the top. I'm inclined to use annular ring shank nails to attach the T&GV which forms the lower panel, out of habit, but seem to remember using clenched nails...

    Advice on lathe purchase

The last HLV-H lathes rolled off the production line in 2018 when Hardinge finally discontinued making manual machine tools, at that time the base price was $55,000 (so about £42k). In that context, it isn't so crazy... Especially as the Super 7 "Connesiour" has some features (like combined...

    Metal Sash Clamps

Those look rather more substantial than any commercial sash clamps I've seen from this century... Considering they're mainly made from bits of left overs, I'm not sure what more one could ask for. Nice one!

    Advice on lathe purchase

Agreed! Given 8k and some time I'd fully expect you could equip a full toolroom, including grinding capabilities from the second hand market. Whilst the new Myfords come with infinitely variable speed control and a spec approaching that of the HL-V in terms of equipment, they're still...

    Advice on lathe purchase

Absolutely a bargain! I believe the factory refurbished ones sell for about £5.5k, which is substantially more than you'd pay for a much larger high quality import like a Warco GH1330 and DRO (£4.3k ish). They're actually still making them (£8.2k a piece) which is testament to how good the...

    Elu EPT 1901

The long ribbed handle under the infeed is on a threaded rod, if you twist it, that will move the infeed table up and down to adjust the depth of cut.

    Heating the workshop

I've been quite successful in draught proofing an uninsulated concrete garage to the extent that I can maintain it at a reasonable temperature and RH to prevent rust with an oil filled radiator. It's costly, and I aim to insulate it to a standard equivalent to my house in the next month or so...

So, do most of you use sketch up for your designs?

Curiously enough, it was doing the opposite transformation which was the first thing I used VBA for... A friend who work in computing described VBA as "Rarely the best solution, but often a fast and adequate one... The expanding foam of programming languages if you will." Which sums it up...

So, do most of you use sketch up for your designs?

I'm mildly jealous, I have to resort to excel solver or clunky VBA macros these days. Never rated MathCAD when I had access to it, but now I miss it. Being able to send files out to the profilers without first having to actually produce a drawing I'm 100% certain constrains all the critical...

So, do most of you use sketch up for your designs?

I've tried most of the CAD programs over the years... My hands down favourite is Siemens Solid Edge (with an honourable mention to NX, which is just a bit too powerful for my needs), nothing else holds a candle to it for me. Fusion360 is ok and has good native CAM tools (as does SolidEdge, but...

Planing Oak Sleepers with an Electric Planer

For removing the volume of wood you're talking about I would mark my desired thickness with a string line and remove the bulk of the material (say 13ish of your 15mm) with an adze and/or (properly sharpened) axe. I would probably do so even with access to a power plane, just for speed.

quality of redwood pine degrading + price increasing.

I have, specifically I'm seeing more boards which include the pith (not something I'd expect to see in U/S). Not seen any fast-grown material, but the most recent lot I bought was marked as from Enso's Uimaharju mill, so that's hardly surprising; It's more common in Southern Baltic/Northern...
