URGENT - please read this - scam alert

I got a call recently from someone claiming to be from Amex. They said there was a suspicious transaction and checking if I'd made it. I am extremely cautious of unsolicited calls. My final years of work was running financial crime (prevention and detection) technology projects. Anyways, I had...

Hello, my old shed fell down

My first and probably only shed build was full of learning points. I (literally) splashed out on Sansin SDF to finish the Siberian larch cladding. Each board got two coats front and back before fitting. It is thin and soaks nicely into the wood. It's expensive but so easy to apply and two...

Dealing with rats in subfloor void

They are great tunnellers. I had some making tunnels from the Virgin Media ducting under the public pavement under my front wall and into my garden. I kept filling the holes with a mixture of Postcrete and broken glass. They even chewed a hole through the pavement tarmac at least twice...

    Optimising hot water schedule

https://www.meaco.com/products/meacodry-arete-one-25l-dehumidifier-and-air-purifier Might have stock problems. Also look at Ebac. They lost their top spot to Meaco due to Which reviews. Ebac hotly dispute the way Which tested the products.

    Optimising hot water schedule

As an update. HW schedule has been tweaked to incorporate a 2 hour blast every couple of days to stop it automatically heating water in the middle of the night. Have managed not to put the heating on since summer. Target has been today - end of November. Left thermostat on a summer setting of...

Workshop cladding - prep & oiling advice

I clad by shed and BBQ shelter in Siberian Larch - V-joint weatherboard. I sanded it and treated it with Sansin SDF before fixing. Expensive but so easy to use, goes a long way and a great range of finishes. https://www.silvatimber.co.uk/sansin-sdf-for-cladding-fencing-decking Edit: Added a...

    Head torch recommendations?

Bought these for a camping weekend earlier this year. Now use them for outdoor cooking in the dark evenings. Pleasantly surprised with the amount of light. Feeling old

I don't feel 64. It just seems like a high number! I count myself very lucky to have my health and a comfortable lifestyle.

I'll make sure the wife has the contact details for Car SOS in the hope they finish it off for me.

    Feeling old

Age is just a number, so I'm told. However, I've started to think 64 is quite a big number. Lucky to have only minor ailments but feels like time is running out and is there time to start new projects like buying a classic car. Really cut back on alcohol since coming back from holiday a few...

    Optimising hot water schedule

No good for me. Low mains pressure. Two bathrooms, 10 radiators. Is your heating on all the time then and just controlled by radiator valves?

    Optimising hot water schedule

As an aside. I've left my room thermostat (in the hall) at 16.5c 06:30-22:30 each day. Normally by this time of year it would be on 21c. It has been mild recently but the temp in the hall has been between 17c-19.5c at around 07:30. End of day it has risen to 18c-20c just by having the sun on...

I think I assumed there might be some truly integrated pumps and called them Smart. The one @Spectric mentioned is this one. https://www.wolseley.co.uk/product/grundfos-alpha1-15-50-60-130-circulating-pump/ It automatically adjusts the pressure. The brochure says: 'Contrary to an...

    Optimising hot water schedule

I get what you're saying. Apparently the maximum benefit you can get with a condensing boiler is 11% more efficiency than a non-condensing one. My maximum saving, based on my latest London Power direct debit is £288 p.a. Few will get anywhere near the full 11% benefit so let's assume I could...

    Optimising hot water schedule

No problem. You have an automated solution which is good. Can you detect and boiler out and return flow temps, or is it just the water storage temperature that you can set? I'm wondering if you have enough flexibility to tune the boiler in real time.
