Who's the most miserable git you know?

I think there are a lot of people like them. The accumulation of wealth becomes obsessive, not the spending. A fear of being poor perhaps or just the thrill of the chase. Money doesn't make you happy but it's good to not have to worry about being evicted, or where the next meal is coming from...

Planing Competition in Japan - Insane

Hard to judge a piece of wood that's had a 5 microns shaving removed. Trying to imagine the safety equipment you'd need before your employer let you stand on a log, chopping towards your feet with a super sharp axe. Wonder if he had all his toes

How to prevent a garden deck sub-base from rotting

Sounds like the joists are rotting from the top down. Is that right? Need to make sure the boards have a big enough gap to make sure water runs off the joist and that crud can be regularly brushed out. I had to repair some joists on my decking. We thought a sunken flowerbed was a great idea...

Challenge - 18th century transport box design and materials?

Thomas, I can see where you're coming from. Great packaging enhances customer experience, especially if there is reuse. What cost for packaging have you factored in? How much extra are customers prepared to pay for fancy packaging? It'll help the experts narrow down the materials and...

    New Workshop Build Advice

I used QuickJacks HS I also added some Jouplast decking risers that I had spare too. The QuickJacks are well made and can take a lot of weight. Took a while to get everything as level as it could be. They compensate for the fall on the patio. A compromise compared to a proper brick base. I...

New Workshop Build - Advice and opinions welcome!

Edit: What Fitz said. If you follow Mike G’s way you can’t go wrong. I’d argue the theory that OSB acts as a vapour barrier (it isn’t) but the key is to get warm damp air to the outside and not condense in the building structure. I only found his method after I’d followed YouTubers who did it...

Beginner question about cutting work the same

Good point. I was trying to get the OP to use what he had to hand rather than go out buying a plethora of new gadgets. Mind you, I’ve always justified my own purchases by how much I’ve ‘save’ by doing it myself. Invariably spending more and telling the wife that the new gadgets are an...

Beginner question about cutting work the same

Are you using the jigsaw freehand? Not ideal for a straight line. Clamp a guide on top of the piece you are cutting. Make sure both pieces can't move and the edge of the guide is parallel to the line you want to cut. Trim up all the boards to the same size. Shouldn't matter if they end up...

I don't think they would believe it nowadays?

Nostalgia is an affectionate feeling you have for the past, especially for a particularly happy time. To reminisce is to talk or write about past experiences that you remember with pleasure. Typically thinking back to the carefree days before you started taking on responsibilities and finding...

In todays world that just wouldn't happen Non-structured play outdoors without parental supervision? Allergens and germs? Cultural appropriation? Negative stereotyping? Unconscious bias? Risk of winners and losers? Ability to light a fire? Child abuse?

    Neighbour's circular saw accident

I find reading these 'accident' threads very sobering and thought provoking. Part of my retirement plan was to do some woodwork. I signed up for a local public workshop. First thing I did wasn't woodworking it was using the bandsaw to cut some fruit tree branch into small chunks. I use them for...

Good point, but times they are a changing. I'm more than happy to have a cashless society. Little need for it these days. Cash Management is expensive.

Interesting snippet on the lowest value coins Here 'So we can conclude that since at least 1707, Britain has not had a coin worth less than the current 1p piece. Nonetheless, the government decided to keep the 1p and 2p coins, noting their historic and cultural importance, concerns that prices...

I don't think they would believe it nowadays?

I hardly ever use cash these days. Much prefer contactless/ApplePay. Very rarely use a cashpoint these days. Can't even remember the card PINs because I'll always use Applepay if I can. I think that's why you can check your PIN on mobile/internet banking app. Struggle to find enough to tip the...

    New Workshop Build Advice

Can’t comment on the insulation yet because I don’t have a door! Neighbour runs a joinery business. He’s making me a ledge and brace frame. I’ve got guttering and bought a couple of cheap water butt kits from Wickes. They are small and quickly filled up so you end up with the problem of getting...

    New Workshop Build Advice

With my very limited recent experience I'd say check out Mike G's shed build advice. It sets the standard. I discovered it too late so I've made it harder for myself. What I can say is 4x2, 24" on centre is fine for the walls. It gives you space for a decent thickness of insulation, as well as...
