    hearing

if I do that water comes out of my left eye - seriously, not like a water pistol, but liquid comes out, just blowing my nose and some comes out of my eye, clearly there is something wrong somewher.

    hearing

I guess this could depend a lot on your speakers, but I got from 35 to 14500 Although the volume didn't seem very constant, turned it down at 140 and back up at 4000. Noise was not constant in both lugs either, it would sound as it moved from ear to ear as the frequency changed

Gluing - how long to leave clamped

For what its worth - this is the thing I was gluing up, lots of offcuts of pitch pine that was going for kindling. it is to eventually form a little stumpy leg for a coffee table - I'm going to add three lttlr splayed leg to the bottom of it, how I do that is still a biy=t of a mystery - lol

    Powered Respirators

thanks for all the replies - you have convinced me and have just ordered the powercap IP, with some spare isor covers. I'm quite new to the woodturning and what I am finding that is different to normal woodworking in the time I spend in a dusty situation. My normal GVS p3 is fine to put on to...

    Powered Respirators

The face shield ones such as Powercap Anyone have anything good or bad to say on these. I'm thinking of getting one, but they seem crazily overpriced! How well do they last? face shields get scratch easily? how often do you have to change the filters (how longs a piece of string question)

    Chisel Question

yes and no - I wouldn't bin it, old knackered chisels come in very handy for many many things. but for heat treating etc - it is just a fascinating subject that helps to give a greater insight into how stuff works. I made a woodturning scraper from an old file, it doesnt stay as sharp as...

    Chisel Question

Yes, as long as it gives good consistant reliable readings. I have one (up to 500c) very unreliable on smallish objects (and it has a laser guide) Its good for radiators, walls etc, but for something as tiny as a chise heated in a fire, +/- 100c at best

    Decking Oil as a stain

indeedy - i'm just being lazy and seeing if anyone has experimented in the past. Can't think why it wouldn't work, will reveal what happened in a week or two

    Chisel Question

as % carbon goes up austenite threshold comes down, so for something like an old chisel (1¼%) getting beyood the curie point should be OK. Otherwise how can temp be measured, expensive equipment? The Colour which many claim to know but in fact needs lots of experience (that I don't have)...

    Chisel Question

I don't think many people heat them enough when trying to harden, or hold them long enough at the correct temperature, you have to get past the Curie point or it wont work. And the you must re-temper (which can often be done in the oven at home (220 for 20 minutes ish ??) And all that depends...

    Decking Oil as a stain

I have some old decking oil that would give me the colour that I want (for an indoor piece of wood turning) . But would I be able to apply something like danish oil on top of it. And if not how would it buff up with a wax finnish - would it stink for ever (it takes a while to loose its smell...

    Bandsaw Blades - TPI

I have often read no more than 3 or 4 teeth in the workpiece at anyone time so as to allow the blade to clear the debris out and cut well. But I have some 6" hardwood that i want to repurpose. This would require a blade of something like 2TPI which I don't think is availabe? I do have a big...

    Fallen tree

a wheel barrow is better. I have a wood out of the back of where I live, can bring 10 stone+ back at a time, sometimes from ¼mile away. 4 wheel trolleys are no good uness you have a perfect wide surface. one wheel is always getting hanked on something.

    Sad news

unless we know exactly what happened, what was he turning and how big was it and how was it attached to the lathe, then it is difficult to learn anything. I have had a few things come loose, but none have done so in a spectacular way, and when I have had some big bits on the machine I have been...

Gluing - how long to leave clamped

my thoughts exactly - however the round bit will only be 250mm long, and have a diameter of 130. it should be OK Interesting thought for the steel seupport, an M6 threaded bar up the middle would neither be difficult or costly and could help aligning it all up when gluing.
