Wax on Danish Oil - yes or no??

why is it wasted? The title and question is the exact same one that I was going to ask. It will still appear top of the list in that section for anyone to see who may know about such things. And if the original participants are still about then they may well be more experienced on the...

How to Finish off - hardwood inlaid into Soft

The more I experiment with scrappers, and the better I get at preparing/sharpening them, the more I am falling in love with them, they seem to give a beautiful finish even when not entirely with the grain. Beginning to wonder why I have wasted so much time with sandpaper.. you don't even have...

How to Finish off - hardwood inlaid into Soft

do you mean surface or suffice ? and i'm thinking you mean to wear down rather than to wake up ? even with the correct words it still does not make much sense. could you have another go at explaining

How to Finish off - hardwood inlaid into Soft

No tear out, think what you are looking at is some dried glue sitting in the lows between grain on the softwood, Trouble is with sanding with a long straight edge (apart from the fact that it doesn't really work) is that the grains are running at 90 degrees to each other. You say seal the...

How to Finish off - hardwood inlaid into Soft

It is a small table I am making that is a mix of Teak and a softwood (its all stuff out of a skip) I have so far just been using a scraper to level the teak down to (very nearly) the level of the softwood. But what best next, exp where the grains run at 90 degrees from each other. Do I...

What Wood & How to Cut

Thanks for that, I was thinking Padauk too, so great to get some confirmation, esp from someone who has used it. And what a lovely job of that clock face you're making! Is it just that fast drying celulose based sanding sealer that you are using ? I guess application as soon as sanding is...

What Wood & How to Cut

Two Questions Anyone identify this wood, when cut it looks orange, however I guess it will revert to that dark colour on the uncut bit after a month or two. For contrast I layed it upon a bit of Walnut inlayed into some pine. (just wanted to show off my inlay - LOL) And second question -...

Interesting if slightly scary looking contraption

I wonder how well car tyres last as the pulley wheels for the band saw, I would have thought the teeth would soon rip into them, but may be not.

    Laser Cutters

Does yours focus automatically ? Mine is manual so it would be easy to set it 2 or 3 mm too low. or do you mean something else but focusing sub surface? could focusing too close cause damage to the laser ? so many settings to play with and not enough time.

    Laser Cutters

Have been experimenting a bit with different woods, it varies so much! .... I have a mahogany I could barely get 2mm into, where as a walnut, easily 7 or 8mm with one pass at 65% power. There is a lot of experimenting to do with power and speed (and then how many passes) One thing I have...

    Titanic

Totally agree, the risks were obvious, so why is it even news ? 5 people a day die on British roads (60 across the eu) Every single day. It barely gets a mention and many of these people will die because others are breaking the law. No one cares, most people will yawn when they read this post...

    Laser Cutters

I now have access to a 60w CO2 laser cutter. Anyone know how suitable this would be for cutting hardwoods that are 5mm thick. need a good clean top cut (not bothered if burnt a bit underneath) Been told not allowed to use above 70%. power What speeds / passes should I be experimenting with ?

    Band Saw Blades & TPi

    Band Saw Blades & TPi

I have a one inch wide band saw blade that is 10 tpi. I have quite a lot of hardwood that 6 to 8" thick x 12" long and I am wanting to cut 8mm boards from it. Is 10 tpi just too many and will it lead to clogging and poor cutting. ? if this is the case and I have no other use for the blade...

    Power Washers

my power washer is capable of sucking in its own water (i think most do) I have a 2 litre container with some anti-freze in, before cold weather, using a short length of pipe I allow it to pump anti freeze through itself, therefor anything left inside can't freeze.. (take the wand off so...
