Gluing - how long to leave clamped

just north of the scottish border, but PVA will still works at these high latitudes. I think it says not to be used below 12°C, but our workshop is very cold which has concerned me in the past for gluing, and we have experimented down to about +4, and it seems just as succeseful as any other...

Gluing - how long to leave clamped

a very good point, I have been gluing stuff up for many years and like most things, I seem to have my own set way, and never really considering another way to what I was may be shown 50 years ago. LOL Anyways, this is a whole load of offcuts that I have stacked ontop of one another to form...

Gluing - how long to leave clamped

White PVA - I have a whole load of stuff to glue together, but only so many clamps. Normally I wold glue, clamp together until the glue started to ooze out, then leave till the next day. But even though the glue might not be fully cured for 24 hours, does it have to remain clamped for all that...

    Which Axminster Evolution chuck?

I doubt the chuck itself is notably heavier, I guess it could take a bigger work-piece but then you could use too big a work-piece on whatever attachment you use. We have both sizes of SK chucks and they both have their moments when they are the best to use.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

In picture one, how is it supported on the lathe? I take it that a dovetail chuck will support the tennon you have made on the underneath, but how did you support it to create the tennon?

my thughts exactly! @Inspector , @mikej460 thanks very much for the links, but they sell a vast array of products and i am clueless what I should be buying. I am very inexperienced on such matters. I guess it all depends on what I am trying to achieve, and since I'm not entirely sure of...

    Weather....

Fahrenheit is a strange measurement with its negative threshold based on the freezing point of water when fully saturated with salt - what was the relevance of maximum strength brine? And why do people think it is British? the bloke, as far a I can tell, never ventured onto out shores. But...

    Old hand planes

does embrittlement concern you? I cooked a very rusty pair of pliers at 5 amps for hours and hours, it didn't seem to develop and cracks or weaknesses, I couldnt break them with a hammer or crushing in a vice.

    Old hand planes

Vry simple and cheap to set up providing you have an old style battery charger. Its a dirty job cleaning off the black gunge afterwards, and recleaning the sacrificial bits of steel Be very careful what metals you use, some can create very toxic gases . and do it outside as And be careful...

    Sharpening chisels - which grit

Thanks for all the replies, mostly confirms what I was thinking. I have 60 and 120 grit which are great for reprofiling a cutting edge, then when I'm turning I have a 240g on the sharpener and just keep giving the chisel a tickle when I come to a difficul or extra hard bit. I was wondering...
