    Round HSS cutters

I know these can be bought from Robert Sorby, but at £15, they're way over priced for such a small amount of HSS. Robert Sorby Midi Round Cutter Hss - Rs130c from Westcountry Machinery 4 Wood I wanted to get a few so I can sharpen in batches. Im looking for something around 16mm. Simon hope...

    Cutting tang for HSS blanks

How would it dull the belt? do you mean due to the low speed?

    Cutting tang for HSS blanks

The belts I bought for my Pro Edge were P36, but the product details just say "Ceramic" and no other details. Do you think buying some Cubitron ones would make much of a difference over Ceramic...

    Cutting tang for HSS blanks

I tried 60 grit on my disc sander (lathe) at 3500rpm. Would take far too long and just eat up belts. It's hard stuff. I looked up diamond discs and it says they're for masonry or ceramic? Do you have a link to what you meant please?

    Cutting tang for HSS blanks

I bought some HSS blanks to make my own scrapers. But one thing I hadn't considered would be just how difficult (slow) it would be to cut the tangs. The blanks are rectangular shaped, about 6mm thick and 15mm to 30mm wide. So need to remove a fair bit of material to form a thinner tang. I've...

    Bulk buying bowl blanks

You're paying a fair bit for postage in most cases, so if you're buying in bulk, you really want to collect in person. In my experience, a lot of 10/20KG sacks I have bought online turn up with lots of small bowl blanks that aren't that useful.

Thanks Phil, if you're willing to let them go for free, I'd definitely be interested 😊👍 Could you get the weights please so I can arrange it with Royal mail? (I'll message you directly)

    top slide / compound slide

Just to clarify, when I said tapers, I only meant small ones. Currently, I can do them, it just means rotating the whole XY table. Such these kinds of shapes (image taken from a random google search):

Thanks Fergie. So far, the only thing Ive bought that I can't reuse is the tool holder. The XY table will be handy for all sorts. But yes, don't want to spend a lot more really if I can. Sadly, its not about trying to save money by not buying a metal lathe, it's just about not having the...

Thanks JG. That sounds great. I'll keep an eye out on ebay for some second hand ones. It looks like new ones would be £200-£300 which would be too much to spend really.

Thanks, I'll take a look. Just to show that the current setup does actually work, here is something I'm working on. I know it's not the best finish, but fine for my needs 👍🏼

Thanks for that. I am indeed only taking light cuts, and mostly in aluminium. I did test it with steel too and was surprised to see it cut pretty well (light cuts). Currently, when I want to do a taper, I have to rotate the Vevor cross slide, which is a bit of a faff, so was trying to add...

    top slide / compound slide

Currently, the xy table with the quick change tool post sits 75mm below center, so I have a block of around 75mm to bring it up to height. The quick change tool post also has some variance to dial it in. The idea was that the compound would replace the 75mm block. So as long as its 75mm or less...

I've been using my wood lathe to perform some very rough metal turning operations you would usually associate with a metal lathe. I've been doing this by using a cheap XY table with a cheap quick change tool post. Whilst this is probably laughable for most of you, it's done what I have wanted of...

    Successful drilling

They're shorter, so less likely to wander. You can move a normal drill with just finger pressure.

    Successful drilling

I'll give the techniques mentioned a go, cheers. My thinking for drilling in stages was to reduce the stress on the drill. Less stress, less wander, straighter hole? Assuming your machine has the power, I would have thought using a spotting drill, and then straight to the desired size (using a...

    Warco Variable Speed Drill Press

Does anyone have one of these? can't find any reviews for it anywhere. It seems to be one of the few variable speed drill presses you can buy (other than the Nova electric variable speed offerings) I would be using it 50/50 for wood work and metal work. The variable speed option is a must...
