    It would braze ok, but would also look obviously repaired. You can get cast iron welding rods which would match the colour, but would need to be in the hands of an experienced welder. Expensive too..

    Also make sure you are using fresh cement…Look for Blue Circle Mastercrete cement…it has additives to help stop cracking and is more resistant to frost damage.Wicks B&Q, and most building supplies stock it….Thoroughly clean the area with a stiff brush and hose down..brushing a weak mix of PVA...

    A diamond cutting wheel is the way to go…cut a notch all round,..then hold it in the vice, slip a good fitting steel tube over the rod to give good leverage and snap it…

    He does mention ER32 and 5C collets in his original post, which would point to a metal lathe, but more information would also be useful…ie what’s it for, what actual size is required, and what lathe is it for.. The more information given makes the answers so much easier and relevant..

    6 jaw chuck? what’s the maximum size you need? and how big is your lathe? collets are really designed to accurately hold smaller diameters… why do you need large collets?

    Well I bit the bullet and put it in the four jaw…slow speed, small cuts…so far so good… 👍 all done….much easier than I’d over thought it would be …turned out really well.. all part of the learning or turning curve…
