Whats your favourite penknife or multi tool .

Not in the UK. Illegal to carry (fixed blade) but not included in the list of banned knives. My old boy scout knife is a Bowie pattern, and in the 1960s I used to wear it on my belt every time I was in uniform. Walking from home to scout meetings and back, once a month in Church for church...

Whats your favourite penknife or multi tool .

This is my other favourite knife. A cheap, less than £5 at a game fair a few years ago. No makers name but the carbon steel blade takes, and holds, an edge you can shave with. It gets less pocket time than the Boker as that has the advantage of a screwdriver and corkscrew, but this one has the...

Whats your favourite penknife or multi tool .

I have quite a large collection of knives, including Leatherman and Gerber multi-tools but my everyday carry, it lives in my pocket all day, every day, is a Boker Plus Techtool 2 Keeps a good edge and legal carry in the UK as it has a non-locking blade. I know you CAN carry a locking blade but...

    Repairs to butcher's block

Close, but the five minutes, when I was a butchers boy in the dim and distant past, would have been 15 to 20, or I'd get sent back to do it again. Funny though, once I hit 16 and got my first motorcycle, I never had any trouble undoing tight nuts and bolts. Block scrubbing is a wonderful...

    TALLOW!!!

I have some in the garage, good for lubricating brass screws into hardwood, just wipe off the excess or it goes green. I got mine years ago from work, the jointers used to use it for wiped joints on power cables. Still available from Toolstation.

    What do you collect

Airguns, had over 50 a while ago but I've slimmed it down to 44 now.:) Triang Railways from the early 1960s, that started when clearing out Mum & Dad's loft I came across my old set from my childhood, I now have almost everything in the 7th edition catalogue except the transcontinental series...

    Let down by Axminster Tools

Ashley Iles bevel edge chisel does have bevels in 3mm. They also do a dedicated dovetail chisel in 3mm that appears to be rounded rather than bevelled. Both however are 3 times the price of a Rider:oops: Jef

    Let down by Axminster Tools

My original (1970s) set of Marples blue chip chisels came with the 1/8” chisel with no bevels, the chisel is just too narrow to have them at the size it is made (to match the rest of the set). Axminter’s illustration of the Rider 3mm “bevel edged” chisel clearly shows no bevels, it looks exactly...

    Which Fuse ?

They won’t have fitted a glass fuse to the plug in the factory. Glass fuses do not have a high enough fault current rating to meet the BS specification, it requires a ceramic bodied fuse.

    Britain's Best Woodworker

You need to finish the seams with an overlocker. (I had help with this reply) Jef

“I don’t have enough time for proper joints so I’m using decking screws”…… That just about says it all.

Carry sheet goods on car roof

On the rare occasions I collect full sheets I split my double extension aluminium ladders and fix them to the roof bars to support the sheet(s). Ratchet straps and lots of rope to ensure the sheets are well secured, paying particular attention to prevent the leading edge lifting. And stick to...

    Domino with a router.

I thought I'd be in a minority of 1 using dowels to join planks with all these fancy tools people talk about, pleased to find someone else doing it the hard way too. Another fan of pocket holes here, although not best for joining planks for cottage style doors, I never seem to have much success...

    Domino with a router.

I've never used a Domino but this device, and the purchase of a suitable router to fit would certainly tempt me as a much cheaper alternative. I'm talking from the perspective of a very occasional diy user here, not a professional who, no doubt would find the Domino more suitable. How occasional...

    Domino with a router.

Very interesting...... .....and economical too. ....if I had a suitable router, I suspect that my OF1010 would not fit. Jef

    What are these?

Yes, they look like laboratory clamps to me too. There were a few very similar in the chemistry lab when I started school. They all disappeared when they built the new science block in 1968 Jef

Pair of compasses, to hold a pencil?

Boy Scout solution - a piece of string with a loop tied at each end. Might take a bit of fiddling to get the length right but probably the most economical solution. Jef
