    Smart meter con ?

My guys were called the "tamper team". If they got a good one they used to call me in to take evidential photographs with the office Pentax for possible prosecution. This was rare though as Board policy was to let them off with a warning if they paid back the estimated arrears. Most did but...

    Smart meter con ?

Well I don't understand why. At the time I was involved with metering, disc meters were seen as obsolescent with solid state devices being introduced. Initially they were used for complicated commercial and industrial tariffs that were difficult to meter with conventional types. Domestic...

    Smart meter con ?

Just for the record the old style disc meters were fitted with reverse running stops years ago. Any disc meter still in service without one must by now be at least thirty years past its certification date. We were coming to the end of finding them when I was working for SWEB in the mid 1980s...

    Calor gas bottles for barbecue.

Did you not see the laughing emoji at the end of my post? It was a (admittedly not very good) joke as a few more alert members noticed. And to answer your question it is an “outdoor electric cooker”, obviously.😂 Just to remove all doubt, see the laughing emoji., this is also another very bad joke.

    Calor gas bottles for barbecue.

Barbecue? gas bottle? Surely you mean “outdoor gas cooker”. Both my barbecues burn charcoal. 😂

    Cars that make you smile

Triumph TR5, the best performing of the TR series before California emission controls strangled the engine in the TR6. It was my mate’s car but I drove it a couple of times, so much fun. Sadly it was destroyed in a fire.

    Any ideas

Yes, it’s definitely an earthing set. That overhead line has been switched out and the earth lead is to make it safe to work on. I supervised the fitting of many of these during my career.

Where to buy 8 x 3 inch wood 5.4 meters in length

I’ve used Bendry Bros on numerous occasions. Very helpful staff, if not too busy they let you sort through the stacks to pick what you want. Again, if not too busy, they will also help load roof racks too.

Is this just another scam attempt

It also states “open in safari”, no company would suggest that. It suggests they are working from an apple product. Any genuine message would say “open in a browser” to cover all operating systems.

    Breaking News: Post Office Scandal

I think this shows how little a large part of the population read nowadays. If it’s not fed to them on mainstream TV or social media they ignore it. I’ve been following this story for years but you have to look hard to find it sometimes.

    Breaking News: Post Office Scandal

I agree. I am dsiappointed she has given it back. The stigma would have been much greater had it been removed by the honours committee. As for Jacob's comment about the judiciary, don't forget the majority of the prosecutions were 'nodded through' because the defendents pleaded guilty, usually...

    Thread identification help please.

As has been mentioned 5/32 BSW was very common for handles of all sorts going back way before the 1956 BS was published and were commonly still used into the 1960s. As for not enough Meccano nuts, I don’t seem to have a problem…..

    Wood stove idea

There must be something in that whenever I’ve seen an extended flue through a building from a wood burner it has always been insulated. If it was such a good idea surely it would have been done lots of times by now.

    Small folding table

I had a feeling you meant to use cm not mm. I blame the French for continuing to hang on to an obsolete measurement. CM should be deader than imperial in my opinion. I grew up learning imperial units, made the change to metric when I started college/work and spent 43 years in engineering using...

    Small folding table

Beautiful, but it looks bigger than 20x20x20mm to me.

Joke thread commentary, criticism and explanations.....

I see despite the existence of this thread some people cannot resist commenting on Joke Thread 4 in the thread itself 🙄 Sometimes I wonder……..

    PlusGas or WD 40

As always with WD40 it’s fine until it dries out to a gummy varnish, if this has got onto contacts it can cause unwanted open circuits. It, and similar substances, were used at work on wet/damp secondary wiring of high voltage circuit breakers which spend extended periods in one state and when...

    Balsa RC boat finishing question

Yes, used to be banana oil in my youth, a cellulose acetate based “varnish”, for inside the hull for waterproofing and sanding sealer on the outside as a base for the desired paint finish.

    Block Planes

I find block planes very useful for one handed planing, door edges for instance, with the door still hanging. I started with a Stanley 120 but passed that one on to a daughter. I now have, all Records, a 9 1/2, 60 1/2 and a 220. All old, all beauties. Even use the 60 1/2 on the shooting board...

    The Grammar Thread

I care, and I absolutely refuse to use text speak when I use sms or whatsapp on my phone. It does have an effect too, neither of my daughters, nor their partners, use text speak to me or on our family groups. I just nagged them until they stopped 😁 On forums (fora?) I always proof read my post...
