    To plane? or to buy?

Advice I never see is to visit your local joiners shop and ask them to plane it for you. We have around 15 local hobbyists which regularly pop in with a cutting list and we'll quickly machine it for them. For 10-20 quid we can plane a serious amount of timber. They often but timber from us too.

Durable paint for repainting kitchen cabinets?

We use a waterbased scratch resistant paint from Movac. Unbelievably tough with. Nice 10% sheen. Lays off nicely with a brush for the hand painted look and can be mixed to all posh paint colours. We have used most paints including Morrells and this is far superior.

My new folding workbench - I'm after some feedback!

The VAT is only an issue for people who are Vat registered. To most people it makes no differnce but every quarter i claim any Vat i have paid back from hmrc. So for me if i spend £1200 with a Vat registered company I know that i can claim £200 vat back so the actual cost to me is £1000. This is...

    Guitar build

First guitar I built I used a book by Melvyn hiscock. I was only 16 at the time with hardly any tools and no woodworking experience but somehow the guitar turned out well. Still play it to this day.

My new folding workbench - I'm after some feedback!

Really like it, enough so that I am thinking of trying one. With regards to price, the difference between yours and others is that I can claim vat back with say the axminster of festool one, and also get free postage so suddenly yours is more expensive.

    Brothers kitchen and house

Finished my brothers kitchen today, thought I'd share a few pics as I haven't shown anything lately, nice and simple kitchen using oak venered ply and painted maple. While I was there I took a few photos of his house and the natural filtered swimming pool. If it was mine I'd be showing off but...

Why can't Anvil make their ironmongery properly?

Have recently used the same fasteners and stays on 40 windows and every one was perfect! Maybe you just got a duffer. For the price I think anvil stuff is really good, excellent customer service for problems and really good trade discounts.

Hoffmann MU2 beaded face frame advice

I think the problem may be that you need an extra attachement which is specifically for beaded frames. It's a pair of metal stops which screw to the fence either side of the cutter. These locate the frame piece with the notch centrally to the cutter for routing and then act as a stop when...

    Chainsaw

We have a timberpro 62cc with 20'' bar. Really cheap at abot £80 and wasn't expecting much but it's amazing. Have had it for a year being used to fell trees then cut up for firewood. We have cut about 8 ten tonne trailer loads of firewood and it's worked perfect. Been quite abused but still...

Domino jointer instead of morticer and tenoner?

We use a domino xl for all our kitchen face frames. We used to use a hoffman but found that the joints were a bit weak. The important thing is to spend some time making really good jigs. We have 2 sets as you'll need one for beaded frames and one for no bead. Our frames are 27mm thick and we use...

    oak ledged and braced door

I've just made a pair of oak gothic style doors with an arched head and frame. Doors were 58mm thick and insulated in the middle. Will post a picture when I go back this week. We charged about £2000 + vat for door, frame ironmongery and fitting but they are seriously top quality. Took about 5...
