    House build

Here’s a few photos of the windows/doors being made, all constructed from accoya and made to current regs. Diminishing rail on the glazed door. Everything was sprayed in the spray shop before being installed and glazed. For the main door I used oak

    House build

Nearing the end of the build, maybe 6 weeks left while I build the kitchen, stairs, utility etc. pictures so far are of the build over the last year leading up to now. I bought everything I would need the week before everything was shut down so should be ok to finish.

Thanks bob, really enjoyed seeing your build thread but your right, it’s knackering running a business and a self build together! Cheers

    House build

To tell you the truth I’m not really sure how the membranes work ect, this was how the architect and building control specified it so I just went along with it. The full build up is 6x2 with rock wool between studs, 11mm osb, breathable membrane, 50mm celotex, 25mm batten with cedar cladding on top.

So, next up we had a roofer felt and batten the roof While he got on with the roof I wrapped the whole building in a breathable membrane Roof finished in plain tiles While the roof was being finished I then cracked on with making all the windows and doors which I’ll show next.

    House build

Next job was to make the oak frames to support the entrance porch and the outdoor patio area veranda, I bought a second hand chain morticer, read a quick book on oak timber frame and had a go, turned out pretty good and was quite quick and easy to do. Here it is layed our on trestles...

    House build

Hi, I started a house build in my spare time a year ago to this day and thought I’d show some progress pics. I’ve got a bit of time as works slowed a bit so plan to finish over the next six weeks but thought I’d start by showing the build up to now. Hope this is of interest to people who enjoy...

    Oak coffer/ark help

So we recently finished a kitchen for a customer and they owed a few hundred for some extra work. During fitting I’d taken interest in a large old coffer/chest which I really liked, the customer offered me it instead of payment so I took it and just wondered if anyone has any idea of it’s value...

    Kitchen cabinet butt hinges

Just wondered which kitchen cabinet butt hinges others use? We’re struggling to find good consistent hinges, they all vary a bit in size and we spend ages on site getting the door gaps perfect. We’ve been using finger tip design from Issac lord but each batch was different, we switched to zoo...

+1 for sleeping duck. We bought one a year ago. The medium was a bit firm so they sent a soft and it was perfect. Best mattress we’ve ever had

STARTRITE 440R BANDSAW BLADE AND GUIDE PROBLEMS

We’ve had this saw from new about 10 years. It’s used for a couple of hours a day and the ceramic guides have been great. We had problems early on with blades breaking as we set the tension using the built in indicator. This was way off and we were over tightening the blade. Maybe use less blade...

    Last kitchen of the year

Few pictures of the kitchen we finished today. Number 4 of 6 kitchens we’re making for a local builder who uses us to make all of his kitchens in his new build houses. We used the under stairs space for a shelved out larder. Pictures really don’t do this house and kitchen justice.

    Christmas bonus

Cheers Bob, thought so, we usually do about a weeks wage as a bonus but as it’s quite a chunk more this year I was hoping to help them keep it all! Meal and go karting with us too, your totally right, treat them well and it’s amazing how loyal and hard working they become.

    Christmas bonus

So, we’ve had a half decent year making kitchens and I like to give the lads a bonus each. Does anyone know if this can be done tax free and legally? If I just add it on to the wages they will be taxed, but could I give it as a tax free gift? I’m not trying to save myself tax but them if it can...

    Business rates

Wondered if anybody has any idea how to calculate these? I’ve been offered a fully insulated 5000 sqft agricultural building to rent, with the aim of running our kitchen making business from there. The owner is happy to change the use to light industrial but we’re unsure how to calculate the...
