    Small Orbital Hand Sander

If you want a true orbital sander you'll be looking at the "mouse" things. Personally I've always found them underwhelming. Mention of 5" discs suggests a random orbit sander (i.e. the disc rotates as well as moves in circles). I'm not aware of any smaller but admit I haven't looked. Perhaps...

Let's see how many came name this tool...

They use it to make bubble wrap, obviously.

Passing Cyclists in UK with a car Genuine help question

I actually thought of commenting on that very issue in my earlier post but decided not to get started on the cycle lanes bit. Voluntary cycle lanes are worse than useless: when you do need them they're full of parked cars. When you don't they have the effect of keeping cars out of them, thus...

    Really 'Off Topic' question

Try the Land Registry, not done this for 20 years but if it's changed hands in the last thirty years or so they will be able to identify the owner.

Passing Cyclists in UK with a car Genuine help question

I haven't read the code recently but yes my understanding was that the distance was advisory, others have pointed out circumstances alter what should be given. As a cyclist I'm typically happy with 2-3 ft for cars on typical urban roads. High sided vehicles, e.g. vans, lorries, buses or even...

Axminster scroll saw - adjustable blower issue

The tone of your post and comparison to the tilting table models suggests you have Axi's version of those. If that's the case I lack direct experience but those machines come with a blower tube of rigid plastic segments. I do have plenty of experience of those as coolant pipes on metal bashing...

    This morn's interesting postbox...

I got a County Court writ this morning... That might upset some people but when I looked at it, my impression was more resignation and "What a ball ache". I'm confident of my case of course, it's a dispute with a creditor who is seemingly willing to argue up is down. Worst comes to the worst...

Saw sharpening old tenon / dovetail

If you want to get rid I'd say give them a good rub down with wire wool on blade and spine, take good photos and put them on ebay with a vague description. Someone will buy them. You'll get more cleaning up the handles first but the effort/reward ratio will be nowhere near as high. The top...

    Wood Gear Cutting

Interesting that it comes full circle. Joseph Whitworth (now regarded as the founder of precision engineering) worked on Babbage's engines early in his career. It has been speculated his developments were motivated by his experience of the project and the insights gained. His first major...

Great, now I'm going to have Roy Orbison going through my head for the rest of the night.

    ever the optimist

Actually for 55p I'd derust and regrind them as metal hand scrapers. People are optimistic though, I was looking at planes on ebay and glanced at a Stanley #4 for £50, the following day I get a special offer through, get it for £40. Still seems optimistic given the condition...

    Is this right?

Could well be. Ultimately Cxx gradings are structural rather than cosmetic. The C16 is less knotty but the knots are by and on the edges where they have a disproportionate effect on the strength.

    Joke Thread III

A man walks in to a pub and asks "Do you serve food?” The landlord replies: "Yes, we have six things on our food menu. You can have a cheese sandwich. Or a ham sandwich. Our specialty is the cheese and ham sandwich. Or you can have any of them toasted." Happy 1000th post on thread.

    basswood or balsa wood?

Balsa is incredibly sensitive to altitude and so are the resulting properties. I can think of the exact reference I want but no idea where to find it if I even still have it. Wood grown at 100ft is light and soft, yes you can scratch it with your fingernails. Wood grown at 600ft is a lot...

What is your pet peeve injury in the workshop?

I find the bulk of my injuries come away from doing the job proper but other handling operations. Cuts while sharpening used to be a big thing but it's moved on recently. I did quite a bit of chiselling over the weekend now my hands are covered in fine nicks. All caused either applying or...

    Shed suppliers

We got ours from the local open prison, I suspect one local to you will do something similar. Joinery is one of the trades taught inside, they can't go out on site so sheds it is. You'll pay commercial rates but ours was/is top quality - they can't develop useful skill on cheap rubbish after all.

Please help - messed up the floorboards

How many coats has it had? The first or even second coats can sometimes be a bit uneven when refinishing old wood as it it gets taken up differently. Once the surface is fully resealed it'll often even itself up with an extra coat or two.

    Corded impact driver?

This is little more than speculation but possibly the power factor would be too low. To greatly simplify, AC electric motors work best at constant speed and torque, outside of that there is more current flowing through the cable than the power rating indicates - they're taking power from the...

    "FACT!"

That particular example strikes me as complete nonsense but the FACT! assertion or something similar can be useful to emphasise a position is based on actual evidence as opposed to opinion or supposition. One unrelated example of that which comes to mind is a discussion I've had a few times in...
