Using foil-backed Insulation Board as sacrificial board while cutting Plywood

Interesting, I asked about the Bosch equivalent here only yesterday with much the same approach in mind. The advice was generally "too underpowered" but I'm aware that depends as much on the expectations of the user as anything else. Obviously I wouldn't expect a saw to tear through a sheet...

Using foil-backed Insulation Board as sacrificial board while cutting Plywood

Stuart Hall International Travel - yes that was a real company, the same Stuart Hall that was done for kiddy fiddling a few years back. I think most people who have been here any length of time are familiar with the quirks of the auto-sanitiser. It's the references to "turnip" files I always...

    Bosch 12V circular saw

Does anyone have any opinions on these? Primary motivation is initial cutting up of sheet to a manageable size, I figure I can cut on the floor atop a few battens. Most of my stuff is 12mm ply or less, occasionally 18mm for bench tops, although with a guide rail if it can be used for...

    Consolidated PBY Catalina

I always somehow pictured you as younger than that Kittyhawk. But yes, a fine model as always. I know the Cat well, seen a couple in the flesh as museum pieces and made an Airfix kit as a kid. You've managed to capture the spirit of the prototype.

    Minimal Tool Challenge

What about one branch of green wood? Bought myself a machete earlier this year but still haven't used it in anger for a practical task.

    anyone seen one of these?

I agree with Artie. Probably would work but it's only a small (6"?) blade and probably underpowered at that - people drawn to something like that are unlikely to be using a high end trade drill. £60 is well into mains electric chainsaw territory with a bigger blade and a lot more grunt. If you...

    Broken NVR Switch

No it does make perfect sense to me. It is awkward to discriminate between NO and NC contacts for a latching switch, but in this case the switch is only latching so long as the coil is energised. If the power goes the switch unlatches back to the "off" position. That I'm happy with. Just...

    Broken NVR Switch

That may be the case, the diagram seems to indicate the extra contact has the opposite sense to the others, i.e. it is on when the other the others are off and vice versa. I'm happy to admit I'm above my paygrade there. Perhaps @Spectric may be able to advise.

    Christmas gift for beginner

Like the others I'd be dubious about the box sets of the kind you are looking at, they look good but the quality tends not to be there. If a plane for instance is not ground flat and square at best it'll be inaccurate and at worst doesn't work properly. Truing up a plane that is bad to start...

That's a known technique, just means that some site you have accessed has been compromised, it seems that so many sites demand logins these days that it's a virtual inevitably. Each site compromised results in huge lists of credentials coming available for sale. Throw in details from one of...

    Wood might become more plentiful

The government just said they're all in favour of homegrown timber. Didn't realise that's what they meant. https://eandt.theiet.org/2023/12/12/uk-boost-domestic-timber-sector-lock-carbon-buildings

Help me find a new utility knife

I picked up a couple of 9mm knives earlier this year and yes they are a let down compared to the 18mm I've had for a number of years. Yes, the nut doesn't lock properly but also the clamping action of the larger knife isn't replicated - you can still extend or retract the blade with the knob...

Help me find a new utility knife

Personally I love these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0001IW59A They do clamp firmly at the very front of the handle - the knob at the rear slides the two halves against each other until they are wedged firmly against the blade in a vice-like grip.

Find me - A single cordless drill cheap cheap cheap

Have the exact same drill, though mine came in a slightly different case and with 1.5Ah batteries. Absolutely love it, most used drill. Obviously it won't win any power competitions and at times I have found it frustratingly slow - not impracticably slow, just slower than I was expecting...

    Wood Saw advice

If it's all on the flat you are looking at a scroll saw and/or fret saw. Definitions are not set in stone but the former is a power saw with a table against which you rest the work - that is what is in the video. The latter is a hand held bow saw. Both have very fine delicate saw blades that...

    Computer says no ...

I suppose I would count as a pen pusher in a previous job, sending paper medical records between practice when they move. GPs, nurses etc knew the rules and why they were there. It was support staff - receptionists, practice managers etc that were the problem. They often seemed to be of the...
