    Sentimental Chopping Board

Lovely story Melinda.Having lost my mother at the age of 2 I can understand the emotions involved. I have some tools from my father, my grandfather, and my wife's grandfather who was a shipwright in Devonport Dockyard during WW1. I'd love to see some of the things they were used on. Looking...

    Phone upgrade time...suggestions please?

I resisted upgrading to a "smartphone" for ages, but when my wife's ancient Nokia mobile packed up, I got her a Moto E4G which seemed fine, although with only 8GB of memory it needed an additional 32GB memory card. It was a great success, and on the back of that I bought the Oneplus One for...

    Phone upgrade time...suggestions please?

I've got a Oneplus One and have been really pleased with it. About 1/3rd the price of an iPhone. My son is a software developer and it was good enough for him. I bought mine s/h in San Francisco for $150, but would still be good value new, especially as now superseded by the Oneplus Two.

    warping kitchen shaker doors

Thanks for the comments guys. Cutting stiles and rails from a sheet of either 18mm or 22mm mrmdf is going to be a lot less work than using "real wood". Looks like that is the way forward. Can't help feeling that simply gluing some stiles/rails on a 12mm door is going to create an asymmetric glue...

    warping kitchen shaker doors

Guys - I know we've had a similar thread before but I can't find it. I've just done a "quick and dirty" face-lift of my mum's kitchen to make it more user friendly for an 83 year old in the early stages of dementia and overall it works well. However, I made the shaker doors/drawer fronts...

    Covering Mdf

Fair comment. Maple or Ash would be pale. Or you could have a painted wood frame with a natural wood panel? Or vice versa?

    Covering Mdf

........ and the easiest way to get a decent finish if you don't have access to spray equipment is to use a dense foam roller. If you use a decent water based paint like Johnstones Eggshell, you will struggle to tell it apart from a sprayed finish unless you compare spray with rollered side by...

    Covering Mdf

Whilst i'm sure it's possible, I'm not sure how easy it would be to do on a DIY basis. Why not decide on which natural wood finish you want, and build it from that with veneered mdf panels. Oak? Ash? Sapele? Maple? They're all readily available in "the solid" and as veneered mdf, and the...

External Folding Sliding (Bifold) Doors - loads of WIP pics

I'm not sure that a cork layer would have the structural integrity needed for doors. I guess you could make each stile and rail like a torsion box with a foam core, but I reckon that the heat loss through 60mm of iroko is low anyway. What I think I would do though in any future project is to go...

    Induction hobs

"The range is suitable for use on all heat sources, including induction, is oven and dishwasher safe* and comes with a reassuring lifetime guarantee." They specifically state suitability for induction!

    Induction hobs

Interesting. Do they also turn down quickly though, given the extra "thermal mass" that they must build up?

    Induction hobs

Tony - you don't need to haul about heavy cast iron. These days, most new saucepans are suitable for induction. When we changed to induction about 2 years ago we needed new saucepans and my wife bought a set of stainless steel ones made by Judge. They appear to be well made, with machined...

+1. the latest range of eggshell is scrubbable too. Used in our kitchen about 3 years ago and seems bombproof.

    Darkening pine for colour-matching?

Remember that pine darkens naturally over time with light and exposure to air, so if you darken it artificially it could end up darker than you want in the long term. I would be tempted to let nature take its course on this one.

Installing a single oven - advice please

Thanks sawdust. Unfortunately Mum has a very small kitchen and having seen the "slide and hide" from Neff, really likes the concept. She has no need of a double oven and would prefer the additional storage space. Shame though as it sounds like a great buy.

Installing a single oven - advice please

Thanks Bob (x2) and Phil. Sounds like the Neff "slide and hide" is the way to go. It should work well in a small kitchen as well.

Installing a single oven - advice please

Thanks Bob. Basically she wants it to cook evenly and be simple to use. She hates touch controls - all main controls have to be knobs. Unfortunately going up market also usually means added gizmos and touch sensitive functions that she neither wants nor needs. We've gone for Miele and Siemens...

Installing a single oven - advice please

I've been asked to install an eyelevel single electric oven for my Mum, who is in her early 80s. Budget is around £450, but could stretch a little further for the right piece of kit. We like the idea of the Neff "slide and hide" range as it's a small kitchen and it would also prevent having to...

    Connecting 16amp p/t to supply

I don't think you have anything to lose by giving it a try. The worst that can happen is that you blow the 13 amp fuse in the fly lead. Worth a punt at a fiver I would have thought.
