Kitchen extension Mega build. Photo heavy!

Final job completed this year was to turn this ...... ... into this. Full thread here for anyone interested in something non-woody.

    major relandscaping job.

Haven't posted much woody stuff this year as I have been busy doing other things. Mods - you must decide whether this belongs here or elsewhere. Having completed our kitchen extension and refit, the garden was a scene of devastation and needed re-landscaping. This was the scene through our...

    Log Store - WIP

I haven't posted anything I've made for a long time as I've been busy re-landscaping the garden, but we needed a new log store. SWMBO didn't want an eyesore up against the house so we agreed that she would be the one to go up the garden and fill the log basket with logs from our store behind the...

Client insisting on cheap materials - what to do?

The end result is up toyour client to decide. Having given you the spec, how you do it is your decision. The trouble is that whilst the client is not always right there is rarely anything to be gained by proving him wrong.

Client insisting on cheap materials - what to do?

+1. One of the most difficult things to learn in business is when to walk away. Maybe explain that you only work with quality materials, and that you choose these yourself to meet the clients brief as to what he wants as an end result to ensure that it meets your exacting standards. Remember...

We're just working our way through the full boxed set of "Cold Feet" which we somehow missed the first time around.

    Boiler question

Some combi's store a litre or so of hot water internally to enable the supply to be "instant" until the newly heated water comes through. So could be the boiler just keeping this small amount hot.

Who is in and who is out?

Let's assume (say) that there is a turnout of 70%, which would be high for a national poll, and the split is pro Brexit 52% to 48%. The result is not binding on the government, so it could be argued that only 36% of those eligible to vote actually voted to come out. It could further be argued...

Heavy drill for a one off job?

+1. I bought one when they were £65, and couldn't believe the value even then. This thing is a beast. Rotary, Percussion and SDS - there is nothing subtle about what this drill does. For a one off job it's a no-brainer, and once you've got it you'll find other uses for it.

Slow finish drying times - humidity problem

Thanks Coley. This is on new, lightly sanded, marine ply. I must admit I didn't wipe it over with meths first. I'll try that when I come to strip and paint the frame to match.

Slow finish drying times - humidity problem

Perhaps relative humidity in darkest Devon is higher than the rest of the country. In fairness to Sadolin, their data sheet does state :- Touch dry : 4-6 hours. Recoatable : 16 hours. Note: Drying times are dependent upon absorption of substrate and drying conditions. At low temperatures and...

Slow finish drying times - humidity problem

I've just refurbished my front door, and have finished it with one coat of Sadolin Ultra base coat and 2 coats of Sadolin Ultra Walnut. The can says touch dry in 4 - 6 hours, and re-coatable after 16 hgours, yet 24 hours after applying the top coat, it is still tacky, despite the outside...

    Which engineered oak floor?

Hi guys - just a quick "thank you" to all those who have offered their advice, and provided links to recommended suppliers. I have passed your comments on, together with a few of my own, and my daughter and son-in-law can make their own decision now. All help offered much appreciated.

    Which engineered oak floor?

Alex - thanks for the advice. Not sure what you mean by a "flooring floor". Can you clarify please?

    Which engineered oak floor?

My daughter is considering having an engineered oak floor laid in her 1930's semi in Kingston Upon Thames. She's busy getting quotes, and her favoured one gives 2 prices, one of about £20/sq-m using a Wickes product, and the other in European Oak for about £50/sq-m, plus fitting in each case...

External iroko - Osmo UV Oil or Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus

Can't believe it's 17 months since I reviewed this. This test piece has now been exposed to the weather for exactly 4 years. The left side - 3 coats of Osmo UV Oil has continued to deteriorate and there is little sign of any protection left. The centre panel (one coat of Sikkens...

    Anyone use Howden's?

When I was planning my kitchen build I tried Howdens (Plymouth) initially as I thought I may buy their carcasses and fit my own doors and internals. When I asked about prices they refused to discuss and told me to get my builder to quote using their stock. I said that I was self building and...
