English Oak - high moisture content - advice please!

Quite simple really. I have 25 cu ft of oak to dry, all from the same tree. I took early retirement in July and I have projects lined up, the timber to do them, but it's not yet ready to use. So, initially I need to dry sufficient for my bookcase project ( say about 5 cu ft including wastage...

English Oak - high moisture content - advice please!

Please tell us more Mr T. How effective was it? How long did you have to run the dehumififier for?

English Oak - high moisture content - advice please!

Yep - I can vouch for that. My sample started burning on the inside and was sending out a jet of smoke at high velocity through a crack in the wood - a bit like those SciFi films of jets of vapour coming from a comet on collision course with Earth. Here are the remains of my sample after I...

English Oak - high moisture content - advice please!

John - thanks for those links - very useful. and thanks to all you guys for all your suggestions. This morning I did a did a MC check by putting a block of the oak in question in the microwave for 5 mins at a time, and took it out at the end of each period to weigh it and to do a moisture...

English Oak - high moisture content - advice please!

About a year ago I bought some wany edge English Oak boards, about 1" to 1.25" thick, by an average of 22" wide, from a land owner who told me that they had been air-dried for the previous 2 years under cover in an open ended barn, which is where I viewed them, and they had clearly been there...

    Fireplace surround

Here's a fire surroundI built last year. Not sure that it is what you're after, but it may give you some ideas.

    Being honest

About 20 years ago we had a guided tour of Salisbury Cathedral, and were admiring the medieval wrought iron work that braces the spire internally, and which incidentally was in better condition than some of the Victorian repairs. About half way up there were 2 interlocking braces that were off...

    First Attempts at Lettercarving

Those are terrific Olly. You've inspired me to give it a go, and I shall be very happy if I can turn out work of that quality at my first attempt.

    Moisture Meter

Not sure whether this is worthy of a potential gloat. Just bought this Wagner L607 on Ebay for £27.50. Price on WM Supplies is £245 + VAT so hoping I've got a bargain.

    Poetry

This appears to be a statement rather than a question (?). Wasn't even aware that he was gay - the piece just sounds like a dirge to my philistine ears. Works as a piece of poetry tho'.

    Solar Power

Wizer - if you are really spending £800 per quarter on electricity that is just insane. Assuming power costs about 10p per unit, then that equates to drawing 3.7 KW 24/7 - or very nearly 4 bars of an electric fire night and day, 7 days a week. That cannot be right. If you have checked...

    Poetry

John Henry Mackay and it was set to music by Richard Strauss in the German version. Doesn't actually float my boat, but each to his own.

    Solar Power

B&Q currently selling loft insulation with a 50% discount. Just topped up mine with an extra 170 mm (on top of the 100 mm already there). An 8 sq m pack was £16.99. My guess is that this discount will disappear before the winter so now's the time to do it.

    Solar Power

Wizer - absolutely agree that PV is not the way forward at the moment, although Solar hot water is worth looking at provided you can do it for under £2,000 - definitely possible using the Navitron system. You really need to get on top of where the power is going. For instance, did you know...

Navitron is another site well worth trawling through. www.navitron.org.uk/ Seriously considering one of their Solar hot water solutions, as we have a roof facing due south.

    Blanket Chest

Super job Aiden - your client should be delighted. I love the WIP piccies so thank you very much for the considerable trouble your clearly took to document progress. First time I've seen coving made that way - interesting.

    Poetry

Didn't know were ex-services Gill - which one? This is along the lines of "Round my teeth and round my gums, watch out stomach - here it comes"! I recently found this on the wall of a recently repaired cob cottage in the grounds of Rosemore RHS Gardens in north Devon. I thought it rather...

    Would like to have met...

As an air cadet at White Waltham I had the pleasure of speaking with Douglas Bader in about 1971. He had a lovely old Alvis which I was admiring as it gleamed in the sun. The conversation went like this. Bader : You leave that alone young man. me : Yes sir. Sorry sir! Well - it was a...

    How would you duplicate this?

Thanks guys for all your contributions. Most helpful. I think linen folds would be too fussy in the sides of a bookcase, although I love them in the side panels of blanket chests, so that's a project for the future. What I have planned is some furniture for the lounge in English Oak ( I have...
