    Best paint for kitchen cabinets?

+1. I used the water based version of Johnstones Eggshell, applied with a foam roller on my kitchen doors. Finish only detectable from sprayed if compared side by side. Easy to apply and tough as old boots.

    Photo Negatives

Agree about chucking nothing out. I have family photos going back to the 1870s and I treasure them. Recently came across some acetate negatives taken by my grandfather in his RFC uniform in 1917 when he was about 20. I've scanned all his negatives using an Epson V500, now superceded by the...

you cant beat a university education

T****l? I seem to remember from Pat Reid's book that there was one "created" under the stage that led to the German quarters, from where Airey Neave marched out wearing an officer's uniform made from a blanket, and even challenging a sentry on the way out as to why he hadn't saluted! It...

you cant beat a university education

There was a primary school teacher on The Chase a few weeks back who said that he had never heard of "Isambard Kingdom Brunel". I have noticed on The Chase that there is often a bias towards the specialisation of the Chaser. Just see how many medical or human biology questions come up when...

    Pension

You need to be careful of over investing in one asset class. If you are a home owner, then you already have a significant part of your wealth invested in residential property. As pointed out above, interest relief on buy to let has been reduced to basic rate only as a transition to it not being...

    Pension

As a retired IFA, that's sound advice. Maybe shop around a few providers to see who has the most competitive charges. Hargreaves Lansdown is a solid company, as is TD Direct Investing. You will have to make your own investment choices, but if you stick to established funds or investment trusts...

    Confused!!

Steamed beech will be more stable. Unsteamed beech can move all over the place. Never had any problem with kitchen cabinet doors made from steamed beech. However, a batch made from unsteamed resulted in 1 door in 5 warping to the extent that they had to be remade.

    Vacuum bag veneering question

This thread is an elegant solution to the continuous running issue.

    I dont believe it

That's a disgraceful price for whirlpool to ask for a plastic box. We had a whirlpool fridge and dishwasher once, and in both cases they fell apart as the plastics became brittle. I've avoided them ever since.

    Magnaclean 2

Sounds like air in the system. Bleed each radiator, and don't forget the bleed valve on top of the Magnaclean itself. Sometimes if water has been severely agitated it can contain a lot of tiny bubbles that will have got in to the system during the refill, and it might take several cycles of...

    Magnaclean 2

A more cynical man than me might think that plumbers and manufactures have no interest in making systems last longer before failing. I can't believe that a boiler isn't better off without that black gunge clogging up the heat exchanger. When my daughter needed her system extending to include a...

    Magnaclean 2

Another good product is a Trappex Centramag which some plumbers prefer to the Magnaclean on the forums. Probably not much to choose between them, but I opted for the Trappex purely because there was a good deal on at the time. To save the cost and hassle of a power flush, I fitted the Trappex...

    Startrite 352 bandsaw blade guides.

I had a chat with the startrite rep at Yandles last year and asked whether the bearing guides on the machine he was demonstrating were a recommended retrofit for a 352. He said they weren't, and that for the 352 he wouldn't bother anyway. He said that roller bearings were great on large...

    Speeding

Whilst a little "off topic", this is still about speed. This thread reminds me of a story told by a USAF flying instructor we had at RAF Cranwell in the mid 1970's. He told how in the Vietnam war he was briefed to do a photo recce of the railway marshalling yards in Hanoi in a Thunderchief which...

    Speeding

A quantum physicist was stopped for speeding. "Excuse me sir" said plod, "but do you know what speed you were going"? "No" said the quantum physicist " but I know where I am"!

he could've used 2 part epoxy...

When I was in my final year of junior school in 1963, one of my mates thought it would be a great idea to wait until the English teacher went into the staff loo, and then stuff an "air bomb" firework up the overflow pipe to the high level cistern. 4 of us were daft enough to hang around outside...

Kitchen extension Mega build. Photo heavy!

Lee - I used an Earlex 5000 (now superseded by the 5500) to spray my kitchen cabinet doors and was well pleased with the result. I used Johnstones water based paint mixed to a Farrow and Ball colour, and used Johnstones own brand primer. 3 coats of primer and 3 of colour. You get a "viscosity...

    major relandscaping job.

Haha. I wish! Actually, unless I paid out for her gym membership she wouldn't have been fit enough to help as much as she did. No plans for any more major building work. Got a fence to build, and after that I'm looking forward to getting back to furniture building. Got a TV unit and a...

    major relandscaping job.

Thanks Bob. No plans for any more landscaping for the time being - thanks for the offer :). I know what you mean about that downpipe, but I could think of no other way to get the water from that new pitch to the soakaway at the front of the property. If I was starting from scratch now I'd find...
