    Palm router

I have no experience of the Katsu, but I love my little Makita, and if anything happened to it I'd get another in a heart beat. The reviews I've read on the Katsu say that the router is brilliant but the accessories, including the plunge base, less so. But looks like you can't go wrong at the...

    Test on the band saw

Oh deer! What do you call a deer that can't see? No idea. What do you call a deer that remains stationary when it can't see? Still no idea. What do you call a deer with sandpaper eyes? I don't know, but I've a rough idea!

    Perfection and woodworking

If you're not making mistakes then you're not trying hard enough. Get out of your comfort zone and push the boundaries, and if you make a mistake, make it a great and glorious one, not some weak miserable little one! I've been learning some new techniques recently in preparation for building a...

External iroko - Osmo UV Oil or Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus

It's been a while since I updated this one. The UV oil only section doesn't look as though it's been treated at all, and the Sikkens part is in need of refreshment, but still not too bad considering that it has been in the sun for 5 1/2 years, including 6 summers.

External iroko - Osmo UV Oil or Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus

Anyone who has found this thread useful may be interested in the new one I've just posted that compares Sadolin Ultra vs Sadolin Classic vs Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus.

Sadolin Ultra vs Sadolin Classic vs Sikkens Filter 7 Plus

A previous test set up in 2012 compared Osmo UV Oil and Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus on Iroko, and it was not long before Sikkens showed its class. But would that be the same on other species of wood? And how would it compare with Sadolin? That's what this new test is set up to establish...

How much vacuum to be effective?

I think the link you provided automates the switching on and off of a venturi pump, like your compressor, to hold a vacuum. A different set up is required for a vacuum pump, as explained here and here. Robert's gismo explained in my previous link achieves the same result for much less money...

    Seeking an additional hole

It wasn't this one was it Malcolm? This was pinched from Steve Maskery, and is attached to my shop vac. I still use the extraction through the fence for most stuff, but the hole ahead of the work piece is very useful when cutting a slot which is isolated from the cut so that there is nowhere...

How much vacuum to be effective?

Try East Coast Fibreglass Supplies. I got the forerunner of this pump about 5 years ago and it's been great. Not silent by any means, but the noise is not intrusive and I'll happily run it for 6 hours at a time without any adverse results. One day I'll get around to building a regulator like...

Media Unit (after Woodbloke(after Alan Peters)) Photo heavy

Many thanks for those kind words Custard. If Wealden have a suitable cutter, I rarely look elsewhere, and this was no exception. I used a Wealden 39mm V Groove Cutter T128-1/2. As you correctly point out, this range has a 0.75mm flat at the tip, and I just cleaned this up with a chisel which...

Media Unit (after Woodbloke(after Alan Peters)) Photo heavy

About a year ago we retired our old 32" TV and bought a new 50" Panasonic smart TV after I convinced the LoML that I could adapt our existing TV stand to take it. I was as good as my word, and this is what I came up with. Smart piece of chipboard (floor grade of course) with a piece of...

    Cutlery Box

Looking good so far Steve. No need to be frightened of dovetails. In fact I have a low boredom threshold, so every time I plan a new project I make sure there is some new skill to learn. This often justifies buying a new toy :-" . This old dog is still learning new tricks, and would work...

    Setting Bandsaw tension

The factory demonstrator at the Yandles Show explained how to tension a blade on a Startrite 352E. It was based on blade deflection. It's no use trying it at the "business end" as the deflection effort will depend on how close the upper blade guards have been set to the table. Instead, open the...

    Hedge trimmer reviews

I have a Stihl Long Reach Short shaft electric hedge trimmer, and it really is the mutts nuts. Stihl is my "go to" manufacturer for garden tools. Superb piece of kit.

    Bobby's Kitchen

Looks fabulous Bob. Not always a great fan of grey, but looks fine here. I like the mix of finishes as well. ABW for the units around the fridge/freezer?

    Shed Base Advice please

For a 12' x '8 shed I just dug a shallow hole at each corner plus another in the middle of the long side and made piers of one concrete block on top of another. Then made a base from 150mm x 50mm and covered with a floor of 18mm exterior ply. For a small shed you could dispense with the middle...

    Harry Potter bookcase WIP

Sometimes the obvious is the way to go. For a beginner (that includes me), either "Roman", or something derived from "Roman" like "Felix Titling" or "Perpetua" make "carving friendly" letters. In my very limited experience I have just played around with the letters in MS Word, using something...

    Harry Potter bookcase WIP

I went through a similar learning process when carved some initials into a blanket box. You might find something useful there. In my limited experience getting a really keen edge on my chisels was the key.

External iroko - Osmo UV Oil or Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus

Thanks Ed. When I'm recoating my bifold doors, I just wash them down, and then when dry wipe it with some 120 grit aluminium oxide paper to key the surface and give it two thin coats of the top coat. It is important to have a rounded edge to top surfaces as the finish will be excessively thin...
