    Festool Guide Rails

Thanks Chris. When you say do a scoring cut set on 7mm, presumably that takes into account the thickness of the guide so that the cut is only about 2mm deep? I know the Makita manual suggests doing this by running the saw in reverse down the track so that there is a climbing cut that doesn't...

What am I making? ** A sacrificial cutting table **

Yep - this is the nearest. It's one of these. CNCPaul - I agree. I'm getting fed up with the balancing act. It's a miracle I haven't sawn the workmate in half. Better men than me have! Cambourne Pete - I haven't really got the room either. The table will fold up and sit against the...

What am I making? ** A sacrificial cutting table **

It's a lovely sunny day, and I have just taken delivery of a s/h Festool TS55 plungesaw and 2 x 1400 guide rails, and it's time to have a play. So that's how I found myself with a sheet of 8 x 4 18mm WBP plywood precariously balanced across 2 trestles and a Workmate. Here's the result of my...

    Router Station

I can see them fine. You knocked that up in a couple of hours? Strewth - that's fast work. A nice Incra Wonder Fence would finish that off nicely!

    First ever carving

Nice. Good idea to start with straight lines as well. Lettering is always a good challenge. As you say, it's very therapeutic, also it costs next to nothing to learn and you can do it in the warm and dry because it creates little mess.

    Festool Guide Rails

Thanks for the replies guys - all very helpful. I see that Lawson-HIS do a Makita 3000mm guide for £128.78, and a 1400mm one for £47.52, making a grand total of £176.30 - which is less than the cost of the Festool 3000mm on its own. I've read that Festool and Makita rails are compatible...

    Festool Guide Rails

I've just picked up a s/h Festool TS55 plunge saw and need guide rails. Any advice please? I particularly need it for cutting MFC for a kitchen build from large sheets, and for ripping hardwood down from sawn boards. It would appear that the 1400mm rails give the greatest length per £, and...

    Bletchley Park

How I love stories about how we "put one over" on our transatlantic cousins. In the early 1960s the yanks were in the habit of overflying the UK with U2 spy planes on their way to Russia. They were asked politely to at least ask our permission first as it was only good manners, but they just...

    Kembang Semangkok - Bullseye window

Just received my bullseye window made from Kembang Semangkok and it's quite reasonable for the money. £60 inc VAT and delivery for a 595mm window, unglazed but including bead. Here it is after 2 coats of Sikkens Cetol TSI Satin Plus.

    Interesting new type of camera

Here's an interesting new type of camera that records light in 3D rather than 2D: https://www.lytro.com/camera That means you can focus any part of the images after taking them - try clicking anywhere in these shots to see it working: http://www.lytro.com/living-pictures

    Finish for oak door casing

Yes, it does a bit. It's always desperately difficult to get a clear uncoloured finish. Why not contact Terry at Chestnut oils? If anyone knows he will. I saw him demo a sanding sealer finish followed by wax at the Yandles spring show and it didn't seem to colour the wood. I'll be...

    Finish for oak door casing

Osmo PolyX oil would be my first choice. Widely used on floors so pretty bulletproof, and if you're using for skirting it will need to be hard wearing because of scuffs from vacuum cleaners, brooms, mops etc.

    Scheppach ts2010 fine adjustment

I guess it depends on what you are going to be cutting, and what other machinery you have that needs an extractor. Until very recently I used a SIP 01342 which was fine for general use, although I have recently replaced it with a Camvac 386 twin motor as I wanted finer filtering for MDF dust...

    Scheppach ts2010 fine adjustment

Hi - I have one of these. Not sure which fine adjustment you mean, but if you could be a little more specific I may be able to help.

External Bi-Fold doors - some advice please!

My windows and folding sliding doors project is getting very close. I've made the 2 replacement windows that go in the gable of the original house as per my other post, and have just started on the single window at the back of the extension. This will be very similar to those already made so...

    Kembang Semangkok - Bullseye window

Dibs - I've ordered it from here. Apparantly KSK is an oak substitute. The bullseye they sell from stock is 595mm dia and directly glazed i.e. no opening sash, and can take a 24mm sealed unit. I've been quoted £50 + VAT inc bead and delivery which seems very reasonable.

how much to charge for making and fitting oak front door!!!

And why do you think I'm doing my own windows and folding sliding doors in my extension before I even start on the kitchen fitting?! (hammer) I reckon I'll save £20k - and I've already worked out how to spend the saving, although not discussed with SWMBO yet! :-" :-$

    Kembang Semangkok - Bullseye window

Nope, I'd never heard of it either, but I need a stock size bullseye window, and I've traced some down with a diameter of 595mm, inc bead, for £50 + VAT delivered, which seems a pretty good price. They tell me that Kembang Semangkok, or KSK for short, is an oak substitute and I've done a bit of...

how much to charge for making and fitting oak front door!!!

Yep - what the other Roger said. Last year we had a quote for a glazed front door and a 4 sash bay window in idigbo that came to £5,500. We didn't run with it!
