    Kitchen Island

Thanks. The mixer lift is the Hafele Mixer Lift 504.22.421 I got mine here as that was the best price around at the time. It comes without the springs fitted. They are powerful and a right PITA to lever onto the steel frame!

    Kitchen Island

Thanks. No reason why you can't butcher some commercial carcases to fit. However, you might want to add some thicker backs to the flimsy stuff usually supplied as they won't be screwed to a wall so may be susceptible to "racking", particularly if adding a quartz or granite worktop. The...

    Kitchen Island

Thanks Rorschach. I must admit it was bit like building a whole small kitchen! My daughter's new kitchen is the same size as our entire 1970's 3 bed semi from 35 years ago!

    Kitchen Island

Thanks Sammy. The floor was new so nice and level, so no problem. I have a castor at each corner, rated to 170kgs each, and 4 levelling screws in between to provide support. The finish on the oak is 2 coats of standard Osmo Polyx satin-matt clear. Thanks Bob. Having seen your own kitchen...

    Kitchen Island

....... continued! Almost ready for painting and finishing. The middle wine rack in the end has a false back to it with a space behind so that it can be removed to fit a 300mm wine cooler later. Loaded into the car and trailer to ferry to Surrey. We needed a reliably dry day with no...

    Kitchen Island

My daughter has spent the last 12 months demolishing a grotty hovel set in a glorious ⅔ acre garden and replacing it with a self build 6 bedroom mock Georgian detached house. She and her husband have been project managing the build, and in a moment of weakness I agreed to build them an island...

Sadolin Ultra vs Sadolin Classic vs Sikkens Filter 7 Plus

They are completely out in the open facing due south in an unshaded position, so open to everything nature can throw at them.

Ripple maple Finish Osmo or Morrells shellac

I'm coming in a bit late on this one, but I had a similar problem on my Sunburst dining table. This had a cherry inner and a birds eye maple outer ring, and I wanted to keep the birdseye maple as pale as possible. After much trial and error, as described in the thread, I settled on a single...

Sadolin Ultra vs Sadolin Classic vs Sikkens Filter 7 Plus

This test has been running for 21 months now, and we're well into the second summer. As expected, mixed results so far. The Sadolin Ultra, and both Sikkens finishes (walnut and light oak) are holding up well on all timbers. That's rows 1, 3 and 4, with row 5 being bare uncoated timber. The...

    Bee on honeycomb

I love that. What a great idea, and beautifully executed. Inspires me to try some scrolling! I think the link to Fiona's work should be this one. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYFU0-zy9ys

    Sunburst Dining Table

Having reviewed my thread originally posted elsewhere, it will be an absolute monster to recreate here, so if the mods will allow, there is a link to it here. Failing that, I'll PM a link to anyone who is interested on request. Custard - hopefully the detail of how I made the lipping will...

    Sunburst Dining Table

Thanks for all the kind comments guys. My best guess is that there are about 200 hours work here spread over 6 months (on and off), not including the hours I spent scratching my head! :D I've done a WIP with loads of piccies on another "Haven of Wood" but most forums do not allow...

    Sunburst Dining Table

Just finished this to go in the corner of our kitchen/breakfast room. it is 134cms across and made from 24mm ply with a sunburst veneer of 2mm American Cherry and Birdseye Maple, separated with a 3mm string of sycamore and ebony. The legs are solid cherry. Finish is a single thin coat of Osmo...

Sadolin Ultra vs Sadolin Classic vs Sikkens Filter 7 Plus

Here is an update on the Sadolin or Sikkens test pieces. After 15 months the only ones showing visible signs of degradation are the Iroko and English Oak with Sadolin classic (Walnut). The Sadolin Classic on the Sapele and Treated Softwood is fine, as are the other finishes. I wouldn't...

New England Style saltbox roof shed (Lots of WIP Piccies)

I treated it in exactly the same way as the door. In my case, the window was screwed to the frame with the front flush with the cladding. I then attached a piece of DPC down each side, which overlaps the window frame, and another piece over the window which overlaps the DPC down the sides...

Thanx. I can take some piccies tomorrow. Any particular detail you need?

    Titan Planer Thicknesser Owners!

Don't ignore secondhand. I picked up a "good as new" Scheppach HMS2600 CI for £400, and is as good as it gets without upgrading to a 3 knife tersa block or helical cutter.

    Upholstery foam?

I used foam from Putnams for our kitchen corner seat build. They were very helpful. You might glean some info from the original thread.

    UPVC D/G window in shed

Maybe a photo or two would elicit some replies. From what you have described, I would anticipate that you could do the same as I did with a shed in which I installed an off the shelf window from Wickes. In my case I installed the window flush with the front edge of the OSB sterling board wall...
