    Under Floor Heating

Yes - the insulation always needed to go between the slab and the screed. Given that the Celotex needs to be laid on something level, in between the screed and the slab is the logical place. Between the oversite hardcore and floor slab would have made no sense. It remained up to us to...

    Under Floor Heating

The main floor slab has no insulation underneath it. Our architect wanted to limit the thickness of the mass of concrete that has to be heated so advised me to put the 100mm of Celotex between the slab and the screed containing the UFH pipes. It still took 4.5 tons of cement to make the screed.

So, what progress in 5 weeks? (hammer)

External iroko - Osmo UV Oil or Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus

All 3 seem to be standing up well. Predictably, the wood has darkened so that the difference between the far left and the centre panel is less marked, but all seems fine so far. The test piece has been in full sun and open to the weather.

    Under Floor Heating

Greg - the kitchen/utility has an area of approx 35 sq m, but approx 12 sq m is existing solid floor which we haven't applied UFH to, and also there is an area of about 5 sq m that we've left unheated down the sides where the kitchen units will go, so in total I've applied heating to 22 sq m...

    Under Floor Heating

I think the circulating volume will be greater than the equivalent radiators. According to my basic arithmatic, 240m of 15mm pipe will contain 42 litres of water - or about 5 buckets full. It does run off the same primary circuit though - but note my comments about the differential in...

    Under Floor Heating

Whilst not really woodwork, most of us do work that is aimed at improving our homes, and I thought that my venture into under floor heating may be of interest. This is NOT a definitive “how to” thread. I am not a plumber, but never-the-less the end result is one that I am pleased with. The...

    grand canyon video

Apparently $87 per person and all over in about 2 mins. You can't even take your own photos - not even with a camera phone. General opinion by reviewers is that it is a total rip-off.

What to use for window frames and pains? Also need a filler.

I have sealed between the woodwork and the blockwork with CT1. It's great stuff. Sticks to anything, even under water, doesn't shrink or crack, and can be over painted. Not cheap at around £10 per tube, but the results are terrific. The clear CT1 looks far more clear than any other similar...

    Mini Cyclone Build

Well I can see the piccies just fine. This is a really interesting build - many thanks for taking the time to do the write-up and take the photos which are always worth 1000 words. Looks like a very clever way to build a mini cyclone. Approx what were the costs involved please?

    Kitchen Refurb

Thanks. Keep the piccies and WIP coming - they're really useful. I'll nick that drawer slide jig idea if you have no objection - and possibly even if you do :D

    Kitchen Refurb

I'll be following this one with great interest as it's not unlike one that I am currently planning. Have you had experience of how the Aquacote wears inside the units? I was planning on using a light coloured Egger MFC for the interiors and a combination of paint and natural wood finish for...

    an insulated door panel idea

How are the panels held in to the door at the moment? I've been using celotex a lot recently and nothing will stick to the foam - it just leaves a powder embedded in the glue. No problem gluing the foil backed side tho'. Easiest way to get thin panels of it is thru the bandsaw. A photo...

    Suitable Dust Extractor

I use the NILFISK-ALTO ATTIX 30-21PC 240VOLT AUTO SWITCHING EXTRACTOR with my T55, and in fact all my powertools. It's a fantastic piece of kit. I chose it over the Festool Midi on the basis that it can be used without having to buy expensive bags, and it has a washable filter. Absolutely no...

    WIP - Memory Boxes

Looks like an interesting project Richard. I'll be interested to see how you do the banding so lots of WIP piccies please. Glad to see there is another member here who prefers to work outside on a workmate on a nice day rather than inside.

    Bifold Doors Project

Yes, I see what you mean. The lack of a stop jamb is probably because as thes doors pivot from the centre rather than from a line outside the door, the edge of the door moves out as it folds back. You could still fit a stop jamb though provided that you radius the edge of the door that will be...

    slide scanner

Looking at the full size image (1798 x 1149), sharpness doesn't seem to be too much of an issue, and only you will know how the exposure compares to the original. You'll need a soft paint brush to clean the slides though as this one is covered in dust, and that will also transfer to the bed of...

    Bifold Doors Project

Very interesting! Thanks for posting. Not sure that this is a job for biscuits. My m&t between the jamb and head was really nothing more than a simple box joint with one tooth on the jamb and a corresponding slot that coincided with the head rail thickness. Once thats engaged there really is...

    slide scanner

It may sound as though I'm a salesman for the Epson V500, but I'm just a very satisfied owner. I think you'd have to upgrade to something like the Nikon Coolscan to get a better result. I didn't find that it was particularly slow unless trying for an insanely high dpi, and the ability to scan...

Wealden Tool Company Router Bits - any good?

+1. I tend not to look anywhere else unless Wealden don't have what I want - and that is a rare occurrence. Orders placed by 3pm are normally in my postbox 300 miles away by 8.30am the following morning.
