    Radial armsaws ????

If you are going to buy a radial arm saw,an older DeWalt is a good choice.Just use it for cross cutting as none of the other things you might persuade it to accomplish are really suited to the machine, even if they can just about be done.

Advice on new router and dovetail jig

I have made drawers both ways and while I appreciate the total flexibility of hand cutting dovetails,I also appreciate the convenience of a jig if I need several drawers fairly quickly. It takes a few minutes to set up and I am happy with the results using an Axminster jig...

    Cheap routers?

A few weeks ago I picked up a 1250W router from Aldi for £25,seemed very cheap.Other than switching it on to verify that it worked I haven't actually had a job for it yet.It seemed cheap enough to me and next time they crop up it might justify the scrutiny of the OP.

Biscuits - Router bit or cheapy dedicated tool?

For joining boards I have found a router cutter quite adequate.I don't own a router table so it gets used in a hand held router and I have had no problems.I would only expect a biscuit to be sloppy in the slot if the collet was running out of true as the cutter tips should be exactly the right...

    Window 10

I am really glad to see so many people willing to help others access the world of Linux.I have been using various forms since 2006 and can't see any reason to go back to Windows.I have read elsewhere that Microsoft will make the new version a subscription service in the next few years and since...

Ryobi, makita, dewalt or some other solution ?

My preferred solution would be to petition the MEP's to introduce some form of standardisation for batteries and chargers. So that all 12 volt batteries had the same terminal configuration and could be swapped between tools or chargers.Likewise for all the other commonly used voltages, ideally so...

    Bandsaw vibration

My first point of investigation would be checking the bottom wheel to see if any objects or clumps have attached themselves to the tyre.If the tyre is clean, try hoovering the dust from the wheels as a machine that spends long periods standing will have dust accumulating at the lowest point and...

So who's going to wipe all their MP3 player copies.

I remember when CD's were first introduced they were a lot more expensive than the older media. It was justified on the basis that there were very few plants that could produce them.Strangely enough, the price never went back down when the production facilities became widespread.I can't help...

    Hand plane recommendation

I can't agree with the idea of a 5 1/2 being preferable to a 4 or 5.I have yet to see the man who could take a couple of full width shavings with one.I also wouldn't buy a new plane as there are thousands of perfectly good Stanleys and Records to be had for modest amounts of cash. They may need...

    Grinding Wheels and Dressing

What type of dresser are you using?A single point diamond might work better than a star wheel.

    More from Aldi

I bought the router earlier today.Looks like good value as it even includes a couple of cutters as well as a fence and guide bush, spare brushes for the motor too.Not sure how easy it will be to find cutters to fit the 6mm or 8mm collets but no reason to feel it isn't a bargain. When I bought my...

How long should industrial machines last?

I suppose the lifespan of a machine has to take into account the level of usage.I have known workshops where the spindle sits idle for weeks and then has a few days of usage and I have known other businesses where the spindle hardly ever stopped. What depreciation policy did the accountant...

Struggling to cut 35mm hinge holes in MR MDF - Advice please

I would tend to agree with the diagnosis of a blunt bit.A few years ago I had to make a new oak door for a kitchen unit as the original suppliers were no longer around.I bought a Forstner style bit at a show and expected it to work.It didn't,even in a pillar drill.I spent a bit of time with a...

    Veneering

Maybe you should have a talk with the people who build wooden rowing shells. They have to persuade veneer to take curves and might be able to help.

    Ubuntu

Why not just go to https://ubuntu-mate.org/ ? You can download the distro and install it in the knowledge that it will work. Its not too hard to download an .iso and burn it to a DVD which you can run "live" to see if you like it and then install it if you get on well.If you go to...

    Ubuntu

I went off Ubuntu when they switched to the Unity desktop.Been using Linux Mint ever since and the printer and scanner just work without specific drivers.Even better.version 17 is LTS so no need to change for a few years.

    Problem with bandsaw

Without seeing the saw I would suspect the current blade has too fine a tooth pitch.A long time ago I regularly used a bandsaw with a 1/2 hp motor from a sewing machine and with a 6 tpi blade it would cope with 40 mm hardwood easily.

    Resin Cleaners

I would think theres a risk that you might remove paint or makers name-if it matters.
