    Excellent scribing compass £2

I used to occasionally see the traditional type at car boot sales, but I think the sellers have become aware of how much more they can sell for on ebay-and you don't have to stand around in the drizzle.

    Lidl - 12th November

My opinion too.Nice clean cuts once they had seen an oilstone and they even came with edge guards. To stray a bit, does anybody know a source for edge guards?I could do with a few more.

    Dovetail Jig Tear Out Help

If the aim is to produce drawers with birch ply fronts for pyrography, why not make softwood drawers and screw on a birch drawer front?

    Lidl - 12th November

I was in Norwich just after 5.30 pm and the Drayton Road branch had several sets of chisels and at least twenty Japanese saws.It will probably be the weekend before I put mine to the test.

Cheap slow wet grinder (Aldi, SIP, Clarke, Draper etc)

I've had a clone of that for quite a few years.Quite happy with it,but I wish it had better tool rests. There is absolutely nothing to use as a tool rest on the wet wheel and the tiny rest for the high speed wheel is very limited. If the makers had spent a couple of quid on some small pieces of...

What shall I do with this woodie?

Sharpen it and give it a try.It might surprise you.

    Bandsaw issues

A 10 tpi blade in 4" timber is likely to get clogged and do no cutting. What radius do you estimate the curves to be?Does the saw have any kind of tension gauge to help with ensuring the correct tension is applied?

    What is 'construction veneer'?

Construction veneer is usually used to laminate shaped structures and can be had in various thicknesses. It is often used for cold moulding boat hulls. It has the advantage that when glued well the edge of the laminate looks like solid wood whereas ply shows the various cross grain layers.A bit of...

    Mounting a vice

I have worked with vices mounted both ways and for my own workshop I had no hesitation in fitting the vice in front of the apron.I have never found a better vice than a quick release Record 52 1/2,but a well preserved Parkinson is no bad thing.

    Windows 10

I wouldn't know,I gave up on Microsoft after I loaded Linux onto my Windows 7 laptop (which came with no disc) and can't see any reason to go back.

    Windows 10

Once upon a time, computers used to come with a disk. You could always re-install or repair a faulty installation. Not any more. That is if you limit yourself to planet Microsoft.

Where to buy a paring chisel?

I have several paring chisels, none with anything other than a standard tang. The one I use most often is a one inch Henry Taylor cranked chisel. My straight paring chisels hardly ever see any use.

What a difference a saw makes.....

Thats how I get my saws if they crop up when I'm passing.A few minutes with some Scotch-Brite and a sharpen and set and I expect to have a good saw.Maybe its an advantage being a dinosaur with the ability to use a saw file.

Which router? Newbie in need of advice.

If you are asking these questions,I regard it as a sign of a willingness to learn and one thing about woodworking is that there is always a bit more to learn.I would echo the comments about disregarding the American approach of only working wood when there is a switch involved.Hand tools are...

screws that dont pull up tight

Some of the most necessary advice ever for screws. Also some of the most likely to be ignored.

Router bits, buy cheap buy twice?

I might be a contrarian voice.I have bought a couple of sets of fairly cheap cutters and the quality has been better than I expected. The downside has been the selection of cutters I have never used.I have also found the Axminster own brand cutters to be quite good, with the caveat that the...

    X - Carve CNC

I'm finding this an interesting thread.I completely understand the comments regarding the structural aspects of some entry level machines and I am torn between building a basic MDF machine from scratch so that I have a better understanding of the technology or buying something like this...

    Surface Planer/jointer help!

Which was the remedy suggested to you. If the tables are co-planar,and it seems that they are close, the advice to carefully set the knives is correct. It would appear that you have a bit of a battle on your hands if the jig is less than perfect.Have you made sure that the cutter block is...

    Bending 3 mm plywood

It depends on the ply to a large extent. If you buy the stuff with paper thin face veneers and 85% of its thickness in the thick core veneer, prepare to be disappointed. If you buy 3mm gaboon with all veneers of similar thickness maybe it will work.A quick way to find out is to take a small piece...

    Nailers for cabinet making

I don't recall finding nails in cabinets, pallets certainly use them and so does Norm.Best comedian on the box imo.
