    Tool Box

Have I got this right? Here we are on a woodworking forum and we have an enquiry about which plastic toolbox to buy.

    bendy cap irons

I own seven or eight Bailey style planes and don't recognise the theoretical deficiency at all. Each and every one works well.It may help that they are actually sharp and set to remove sensible shavings.

Triton Oscillating Spindle Bobbin Sander sanding sleeve.s

I would have thought the 150 would be sufficient for the bare wood.I seldom use finer until a finish is applied.

Thats a really fine grit. What material are you sanding?

    B&Q trade point counter rant

I don't have their trade card.I also regard them as the supplier of last resort, partly for the reasons above.

    Panel Saw Tensioning

Excellent post and it reminds me of the tenon saw I found in a box of old tools I bought at auction in the eighties. It hadn't been of interest but when I had sorted the other items and sold on those I had no use for it languished at the back of the workshop for a while. Finally I picked it up...

    Protractor

You probably already own everything necessary.I find a good rule and a straight edge, when combined with a calculator with trigonometry functions is more than adequate. For accurate engineering work a sine bar comes into play and all you need to do is scale up the numbers to suit your job.

    Recommendation for a Jig Saw

If it was my money,I'd buy a Bosch GST 160 BCE.Lots of power, quick change blade and a large chunk of money left in my pocket.I haven't used the current generation Mafell but have a fair bit of time with an earlier version and believe the Bosch would match it.

14" (or so) vintage wooden planes.

The example in post No2 is what my woodwork teachers referred to as a Technical Jack plane.I never saw one in any other context.

    Panel Saw Tensioning

Bob Smalser covers the topic well. The topic reminds me of a presentation I saw back in the eighties from a company specialising in shot peening and focusing on the benefits of imposing a force on the surface of the material by impacting it with a lot of small blows. It seems to me that the...

    What's the best epoxy?

I don't know if the OP has ever used epoxy and would advise that a bit of study might pay dividends, rather than running the risk of an expensive mistake.Epoxy is a wonderful adhesive and has other useful properties, unfortunately it isn't quite clear and has a faint honey colour. This may not be a...

Great job!Theres no better way to possess a unique tool.

    Sharpening band saw blades?

I have seen bandsaw sharpening machines in action and I have, when desperate, sharpened a 10'6" 6tpi blade with a 35 mm Roloc disc in a small air driven grinder.I still buy blades from my local supplier. They just work as soon as I fit them.

    Going out on your own

Welcome to the forum! This thread might be relevant to you let-s-be-honest-can-you-even-make-money-from-woodworking-t94720.html Maybe a bit pessimistic, but it might give an alternative view.

Tool restoration; how far should we go?

This could be an interesting discussion. My choice, which I would not attempt to force onto anybody else, would be to clean and wax the sole and to do the bare minimum of cleaning to the cap iron. Then sharpen it and look for a job to do with it. I have known a man who stripped the wooden infill of...

    Annoying Pop-up

I don't suffer from it.Maybe because I use Firefox with the No Script add on as a knowledgeable friend said it was a good way to avoid unwanted things occurring at the behest of a distant website.

    Saw and Chisel advice

I am absolutely staggered that anybody would rip 8" sapele with a handsaw. It seems to be force of circumstance rather than a freely chosen course of action. If anybody makes a choice of confining their leisure activities to the use of hand tools only, then obviously they need the correct tool for...

    Saw and Chisel advice

I agree with Jacob, having earned a living by working with wood since the seventies I have seen precisely no rip saws in use in any workshop.A fair few of the gurus who preach to the amateurs seem to be distorting the reality. For a beginner I would recommend a reasonably fine tenon saw as a good...

    Router Planes - Which Blades

I don't know the particular tool, but can assure you that you will be unable to cut a housing any narrower than the width of the blade you are using.I am also very glad you used the correct description for a housing,Americanisms seem to be encroaching everywhere these days and you have resisted.

Let's be Honest -can you even make money from woodworking?

Without wanting to appear too cynical, how much time would you save if you relaxed your standards a bit?It can be a lot faster to settle for excellent rather than perfect.
