Arduino & raspberry pie, anyone use them?

I have a Raspberry Pi and find it quite impressive, considering the modest cost it is amazing. You will need to learn a little about operating systems that aren't marketed by Microsoft. If you have any experience of downloading Linux distros it takes very little time to get a Pi working.I found...

    Mother of all planes

I didn't see it myself, but I was reliably informed that there was a boatbuilder in one of the local yards who had such a plane and had modified it by removing the legs and fitting a conventional closed handle. My informant had seen it in use back in the seventies.

    Epidemic conjunctivitis - be aware

Thanks for the alert.I have recurring blepharitis and tend to believe any eye trouble is a return of the problem.I will now be more vigilant and in light of the warning I hope not to experience the affliction at first hand.

    Posidrive Camming out

Can you give a source for this?I have seen it stated quite often that this is indeed the case for Philips heads, but never pozidriv. If I really had to depend on a screw head not camming out,I would use Torx.

Did anyone watch Evans's "Top Gear?"

I think the BBC are strangling the goose that laid golden eggs. The old crew were genuinely interested in cars and for me,the best part of the old series was when they sat around rabbiting about new models and relating them to other things. The Evans era seems to be focused on personalities-both...

    Which Plane Next

I would have recommended looking on ebay for a Stanley No 90.The ability to plane into a corner might be very useful.

Vacuum bagging - ripples on finished piece ?

I have no idea what hpl might be.I do have a fair bit of vacuum bagging experience and I would recommend using a pressure pad on the thinner material to eliminate ripples.Alternatively you can place the thinner material below the thicker piece and vacuum to a flat surface. In a bygone time I used...

    Vintage bandsaw

Looks like a wonderful machine-anything that old with a cast iron frame is fundamentally good. You need to check whether the motor is three phase and you may find it prudent to increase the guarding. The machine only needs true wheels and sound bearings-the rest can be fixed.Details like blade...

Re-commissioning old planes, what's worth your time?

The plane on the left looks like an honest tool, the other one looks like one of those Hollywood stars thats had a bit of "work" done.Your tools and your choice.

    bench vice brands?

You are unlikely to go wrong with a used quick release Record.A Parkinson would also be entirely adequate, but a bit scarcer. If you really want the ultimate-see if you can find one of these: http://www.mprime.com/Emmert/index.htm .

Adventures in one day in the life of an *****.

I won't admit to quite the same lack of enthusiasm for power tools,as they do have their uses.Having read the tale of the planer it reminds me why mine gets used so little.Maybe the tale should be re-told on one of the American forums since there seems to be an abiding belief that "tools"...

    Edging Veneer - please help

You can use edging with any type of glue you like. All you have to do is come up with a sensible way to hold it in place while the glue cures.Edging cramps work as does multiple strips of masking tape, try a couple of test pieces first.

    Skills shortage: ana American perspective

Around here night school has withered to the point where little other than a handful of conversational language classes survive. The only vocational options seem to be floristry and book-keeping.Are the online alternatives delivering?

    LARGE OSCILLATING SPINDLE SANDERS?

If you really need something larger than the Jet,try a search for a Philipson or Wadkin. The Wadkin may well only be available as a disc and bobbin combination machine,Philipson made a standalone bobbin machine.Be aware that you are getting into patternmaking territory and prices may reflect this.

    Newark Show

My mistake,I thought a forum for woodworkers might have included a few who knew about a woodworking show.http://www.nelton.co.uk/midlands-woodwo ... -show.html .

    Skills shortage: ana American perspective

The other side of the same coin;in the nineties I had a meeting with a local business adviser as a prelude to becoming self employed. She asked me what would happen if I needed a trainee and how long it would take to bring them to a fully skilled level (at the time the "apprenticeship" vogue...

Fashion and the Art of Hand Planing.

Its interesting that there are references to infill planes in this thread. In the context of fashion, they could be said to have achieved their sales as a result of being in vogue.A screw adjustment would have been more convenient for the user and the metal sole would have been much more durable...

    Marking Walnut

I have found ordinary masking tape and a normal pencil will work.I have also used a few dabs of Tipp-Ex and a pencil, but it does need a bit of cleaning up which isn't a huge penalty for the comparative security relative to the risk of tape detaching.

    bendy cap irons

The title of this thread refers to bendy cap irons.None of my planes, which range from the thirties to the eighties and are either Record or Stanley have any indication of bending. If they were loaded sufficiently to bend,I doubt that adjustment would be possible. The subsequent statements of...
