Just bought a cheap Stanley Fatmax drill at Homebase

I was hoping to get some of my outside paintwork tidied up today and after finding that the tin of undercoat had turned solid I headed off to Homebase. They are having a clearance sale at the moment and after buying my undercoat I picked up a Stanley Fatmax 18V drill with two Lithium batteries...

Do the purveyors of handtools actually use the handtools?

With my cynical hat on I will have to ask how you can be unaware that all "tools" have switches these days?Anything else is neanderthal stuff.

To barrel (grip), or not to barrel?

Its personal preference with jigsaws.I have used both types and wouldn't spend my own money on a barrel grip.If I am working on a project where only barrel grip saws are available,I can get by.

    Sloping workshop floor advice

I would just skim the floor to take away the coarse ripples and get on with life.Is there any work planned that absolutely must be done on a level floor?Lots of work has been done on sloping floors and even bumpy earth floors and a large flat assembly bench is very useful, even when slightly...

    Deep ripping by hand

Admirable persistence.Maybe one day people will start selling ripsaws again, its good exercise and no polar bears have been made homeless by power station emissions.Obviously in a commercial environment power tools will prevail.

    Boat building

There are a couple of other forums (fora?) where you might get helpful advice in the topic: http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/ http://forum.woodenboat.com/ .

    Wood Fading/Darkening In Sunlight/UV

Some food for thought in this thread.I have known mahogany type timbers change colour very quickly,a claw hammer left on a board for a little over an hour left a pale shaped patch.I wonder whether the 2 part yacht varnish would give longer lasting protection, its pretty noxious stuff and one...

    Bucket list

Nothing comes to mind actually.I can't get interested in making something thats already been done.I liked the wooden Bentley in the Donington museum and wish I had made it,but somebody else did.Maybe a wooden aircraft that moves the technology on a touch. If a twenty first century Frank Costin...

Carrying on the fight against slugs in the garden.

I have Spanish slugs and they are a scourge.

    Teak

A few weeks ago,a major supplier was offering teak at £7400/cubic metre.I believe it to be plantation grown and quite likely with the same sort of growth ring spacing as pallets. My advice is to take a look and be guided by your conscience.

    The inspirational Alex Zanardi

I seldom start threads on this forum, but a truly exceptional achievement deserves a mention.A couple of days ago,Alex Zanardi added another paralympic gold medal to the two he won in London in 2012 for hand bicycle.Alex is a very successful racing driver who became eligible for the Paralympics...

    Using a hollow plane

I haven't read the book that custard recommends.I suspect that you need to slightly adjust the shape of the iron by careful sharpening so that it is exactly the same shape as the sole-as D_W suggests .I have a fair number of moulding planes and the majority have irons that are just slightly...

    Bevel-up, angle low: woodworker confused..

And if they produce something other than furniture?

    Bevel-up, angle low: woodworker confused..

I'll add my voice to the two previous comments.Sharp is much more important than anything else and a bevel down plane will probably have the bevel at a lower angle than even a low angle block plane. The users of honing jigs may protest that they know exactly the angle that their bevel is;I would...

    Norris Smoother

If you haven't used a Norris it will take a little time to get used to the grip.Unless you have difficult grain to contend with you won't see much benefit over a sharp Stanley or Record and even then,a Stanley with the frog adjusted forward a touch can work very well.I have Stanleys, a Record...

    unknown wood

Without a higher res image its difficult to be sure.It might well be sycamore-or alder, hornbeam or perhaps poplar.

    Smartphone protection while working

I just put mine in my pocket with the screen against my leg.The only problem I've had is the charging socket filling with wood dust.A previous phone had less good sealing and when I had a charging problem and took the back off in the presence of an electrical engineer of my acquaintance I...

Browsing around and came across this stunning masterpiece

I think its great that somebody has gone past the tyranny of regular geometry and made something unique.I wouldn't want it as a timepiece as a quartz clock does the job better. In a similar vein,a few years back I bought a facsimile reprint of "The Gentleman and Cabinetmakers Director" in a sale...

    How dry can/should wood be?

I've yet to find timber with a moisture content below 14%.I don't own a moisture meter and have no plans to acquire one as I don't believe they are based on principles that relate to real world results.Measuring resistance between probes on the surface of the wood may tell you a bit about the...
