    ..........

The mail service is working very nicely. If I had one wish for Yahoo though,it would be that the home page could be sidestepped;never seen so much rubbish and clickbait.

What did I find in my tidy-up?

Not obeche-thats straw coloured.Iroko is my guess and a larger image would be helpful to confirm that.

need to cut scarf's on thin material

If it is for a drum type job,its a little more challenging than lengthening a single piece. To add another piece to arrive at a longer piece it is easiest to stack the two pieces with the ends separated by the length of the scarf and just plane away the excess.I have known times when a narrow...

    What solvent

I have never tried WD40 and doubt that I will since I converted to velcro.I have used cellulose thinners since it was easier to find than acetone and it was ok.The thing that would definitely work is toluene and that really is hard to find and needs to be treated with the greatest of care as it...

    Workshop blues

Agreed about the glue-bin it.The exception I make is for foaming polyurethane as it seems to be ok with cool storage.PVA lives in the kitchen and epoxy doesn't get used until warmer weather.

    Tolerances in woodwork

I don't quite understand the description of the piece being sought. The thicknessing problem as I understand it is that a piece of maple is varying in thickness by 2.5mm over a length of 1 metre.A well set up thicknesser should have no great problem holding accuracy much better than that and a...

    Starship enterprise plane.

I have read tales of some heavy duty planing in the pre-machine age being done by two people. The boy was supposed to have used a rope to assist with moving the plane, while the experienced tradesman pressed down and guided the plane. Those horns at the front would be a good place to attach a rope.

    Thread milling for box lids

Are we in the realms of thread milling or tapping?I understand the theory of thread milling on CNC machines, but have never known it to be done on woodworking projects.

Regular Mortice Chisel or Bevel Edged for your Mortices

I don't understand why chopping mortises by hand adds value to a house.Maybe if I did I could add value to all sorts of things.

    Infill smoothing plane find

Nice looking plane and it represents a lot of work from the maker.I am a little surprised that the metal sides have been made so low near the throat as this would invite a breakage if the plane ever fell off a bench. If it was mine,I'd just Scotchbrite the metal and sharpen it-then enjoy it.

    "French cleat" or something else?

Clearly somebody didn't understand that a bight of rope is a loop along the length of the rope and nothing to do with dentistry. Before the internet corrupted our language,I used to hear such items referred to as a hook cleat, but this was in the days when British woodworkers had sawbenches rather...

Advice about a Jet BOS-5 bobbin sander

I have to thank you for the guidance and encouragement.I took the drive out of the case and investigated, since it was a small amount of movement there was nothing major staring me in the face. Then when I looked closely there was more play at the bottom of one of the links than the other and when...

Advice about a Jet BOS-5 bobbin sander

Thanks for that link,I have downloaded the document for closer study. It isn't immediately obvious what guides the vertical motion but I will at least have a guide as to what goes where if I totally dismantle the machine as I fear I will find myself doing. The other thing that became apparent from...

Elu routers - still a good buy, even now?

I would jump on the Elu,but then I still have a Stanley 267 in good order and wouldn't like to be without it.I haven't used the equivalent Trend but I would expect it to be good and I would buy the Trend in preference to a DeWalt as I have found two of their MOF96 replacements had bases that...

Advice about a Jet BOS-5 bobbin sander

A while back I bought a used Jet BOS-5 bobbin sander and it had spent most of its life in a school workshop.I had to conclude that the pupils regarded woodwork as a punishment as there had been quite a lot of abuse and it has taken a bit of time to deal with the effects.I can sort of understand...

Air-tight Box via Milling or CNC?

Wouldn't it depend to some extent on the air pressure differential,if any, between the inside and outside of the box?At low pressure and with parameters for a high quality surface finish,I would have thought that a box could be machined that would be for all practical purposes airtight.I was...

Taper reamer, what might it be used for?

Might be for putting the holes for spiles in beer barrels.

    Has anybody worked with Freecad?

Thanks for the suggestion .The thing is that like you,I used to use Autocad-did the basic course twenty years ago.I also moved to 3D modelling a good while ago in the day job and would prefer to stick with 3D and Freecad does 2D drafting anyway.I find it great that at no cost I can install a 3D...

    Has anybody worked with Freecad?

I have a bit of experience with several 2D CAD programs and I have done a little with 3D modelling sytems such as proEngineer/Creo.Since I found Freecad I have been trying to become adept with it and am making slow progress.Has anybody else had a look at it?It became more interesting when they...

    Perfection and woodworking

I don't claim to make anything that is perfect.I am happy if people have to look really hard to find blemishes and I have worked alongside men who are only happy if they examine another's work and detect a tiny blemish. My take is that perfection may be attainable, but it takes time and lots of...
