    Hancock's Half Hour

I'm very glad not to be a London commuter, but then thats always been the case.I gave up watching the windbaggery weeks ago as the whole thing could have been condensed into five minutes. It actually reminds me more of "Are You Being Served" with the fairly patronising tone adopted when the staff...

    Avoiding Covid 19

I've only been to the Isle of Wight once and I won't be going there this weekend.Isn't it where David Icke lives? It looks like the Darwin awards will have lots of nominations to select from quite soon.

    "Low-skilled" workers

If it was heard on R4 the speaker was probably somebody who believes an Oxbridge PPE degree is a good foundation for making all sorts of pronouncements. And somebody who would be hard pressed to bang a nail in.

    Waterproofing Plywood

Before they changed the formula i used Thompson's Water Seal for quick and fairly effective sealing.since it changed I wouldn't be so sure about whether it worked.

    Costs of 3D printing?

I was reading one of several pieces online about the widespread efforts to produce PPE with 3D printers. One of the Formula 1 teams was able to produce items in a few minutes that were taking a great deal longer with home hobbyists printers. No doubt the printer cost a great deal more than the...

making a new chisel handle, worth it or not?

Definitely worth doing.I've made handles for a couple of chisels and found the most difficult part was getting the ferrule to fit.The rest was easy and you need to take particular care to drill it with a series of drill bits of decreasing diameter at increasing depth.Otherwise the nice positive...

    Lightweight Router

A bit more information wouldn't go amiss. Is the plan to use the router freehand or will there be letter templates involved?Since the topic is lightweight,I suppose we can assume all 1/2 inch routers are excluded. The Makita cordless would probably be a good choice for names that aren't too...

    spokeshave

I have used a few Stanleys and don't really recommend the adjustable versions. If you must have one,the malleable version is the better. The non-adjustable,which I believe is the model 63,is variable according to age and a good one is a superb tool.I had one that I bought in the mid seventies that...

    Bending Ply - recommendations

Before buying, take a look at the ply.If either of them has a core that looks to be 80% of the total thickness it gets harder to bend without the risk of breakage.I would need a lot of convincing to use a contact adhesive as they tend to creep.A known PVA or Cascamite would ordinarily work.

    Bowed Bellied Chisels

I have to disagree about a bit of concavity being desirable. It makes it more likely that the chisel will dig in.I don't see too much to get bothered about with the chisels in question, its something you get used to and each chisel has a different feel in your hand in any case.Probably best to put...

    Boarding a loft.

I found the chipboard sheets with the bevelled T&G edges were a quick and easy way to do the job. When I boarded my loft about thirty years ago,the insulation requirements weren't as stringent.I do wonder whether the conductivity of OSB or chipboard might be comparable with rockwool. You should...

    Bandsaw woes!

I don't know the machine but would suspect the damaged bearing is no longer allowing the bottom wheel to run true and may be throwing the tracking out.Wait for the replacement to arrive and re-assemble carefully and it might be OK.Continuing to use a damaged machine is almost certainly...

    Newby!

Another addition to the numbers here is always welcome. The woodworking spectrum covers all sorts of things and most of us gravitate to a particular region as our interests crystallise.Try a range of things as and when they appeal and don't be tempted to buy too many flash gizmos until they are...

Premium hand tools - prices slashed

Seconded! After all very few would have been earning enough to buy such trinkets.Back in the seventies I worked in the same company as an elderly cabinetmaker who owned the only Norris plane i had seen at that time.He bought it new after finishing his apprenticeship and it cost him three weeks...

Bathroom cabinet. Hand tools only. (Now finished)

I'm really pleased to see a thread like this.It might help to counter the impression that you need a workshop filled with machinery to accomplish anything. As we can see that isn't the case and you are producing a useful item and getting a good amount of exercise in the process. Not a trivial...

Why safety goggles are important ....

I totally agree, neither of us would fit in in American woodworking it appears.I have worked with a number of vintage British saws that weren't tilt arbor and which had the crown guard fitted to to a very sturdy arm attached to the back corner of the table. With a tilting arbor, which now seems...

    posi woodscrews v Torx

I haven't got an impact driver and don't intend to buy one for screwdriving. My feeling is that its a bit like the tyre fitters who use impact drivers, rather than correctly torquing the wheel nuts. You get the fastener done up quickly but out side the slap it together and move on fast type of...

I want to make a radius jig on a router table

Router tables give me the heeby jeebies.Never used one and don't want to,yet I'm quite happy to use an overhead router or even a spindle (for some jobs).I think disc jigs work well with a disc sander as illustrated above in Yojevol's post.Even then there is a sensible limit to the minimum size...

Antibody Tests with Covid - 15% Population Rate in Germany

Over 1 million is a good start. Is it guaranteed that they have immunity and can't spread the virus? It will be even better if we can get to 61 million without a disproportionate number of deaths, but that may be difficult and it will take a while. As may developing a vaccine. So the big question has...
