    Free Drawing Software Package Suggestions

I believe I said exactly the same about Freecad, since it is a parametric modeller and has all you need to produce Gcode for a CNC router.I also said its absolutely free and always will be-no limitation on turnover or sliding scale of subscriptions. The choice is there.

    Free Drawing Software Package Suggestions

Qcad,Librecad,Sketchup and Fusion are very popular.Do you intend to use the computer as an electronic drawing board to produce 2D drawings or are you likely to progress to 3D modelling?Personally I use Freecad because it has a huge range of workbenches for a wide range of tasks from basic 2D...

    Working with pallet wood

I have to agree with the majority of the comments regarding the quality of pallet wood.I would also add the caution that they would almost universally have grit particles embedded in them by being dropped on warehouse floors or car parks and this will do your thicknesser knives no good at...

Might we see a change in design trends?

Since the virus came to dominate our lives and we became more aware of the importance of sanitising our domestic surroundings,do you think we will see a change in design trends to make furniture easier to wipe clean? We have lived through a period when those mocked by one of my architect pals as...

    Hancock's Half Hour

Lets not confuse Niall Ferguson the historian with Neil Ferguson the epidemiologist.

    Hancock's Half Hour

I have been extremely happy to roam further afield than the local streets and footpaths since the most stringent lockdown restrictions were lifted.I may have been lucky only to encounter thoughtful people making an effort to maintain social distancing.I was absolutely shocked when I saw the...

    Heat treating an old chisel

I'm glad to learn that a successful outcome was achieved.I'm also not surprised that a water quench worked as I would be reasonably sure that the overwhelming majority of tools through the ages were water quenched.I have successfully treated a gouge that was soft in much the same manner as has...

    Hancock's Half Hour

I think the official hints from the Bank of England are sufficient to tell us what might be ahead. Its also pretty clear that much of the retail world is built on pretty frothy foundations. We clearly need supermarkets,do we need vape shops and nail salons? Will we continue to flock to car...

    Segmented turning books or websites.

Thats a pretty respectable first attempt.I'd give it a finish of some sort and find a use for it.Even if only for storing oddments in the workshop.

    Hancock's Half Hour

An interesting observation.I would counter by mentioning that a few days ago on the excellent Euronews channel they ran a feature on the food banks operating in Northern Italy and serving the increasingly desperate members of the black economy. Not a small community judging from the length of the...

    TV on pc?

It must be at least 12 years since I bought a usb tv stick for a computer. It still needs an aerial to provide a signal but it picked up all the digital signals in the area.I paid £1.04 on ebay and it came straight from China. The same sort of thing is still out there and there are alternatives.

    CNC machine or not?

The technology exists now but it isn't cheap. It is likely to get cheaper as these things do and then you will be able to stand a scanner in the room and create a surface model in a few seconds.Insert your panels and shelves into the room and trim the edges to suit in the CAD software and then...

    CNC machine or not?

Nor an uncommon point of view. I don't know of any other class of machine that will be getting on with the job while you press on with something else.In addition,I would suspect that spending a bit more on a Proliner or similar digitiser would allow the parts to be cut to a level of accuracy...

    CNC machine or not?

I have seen at least one youtube video featuring the gadget.I wish they would make one showing the whole process of creating the object and then the toolpath, before placing the sheet of material on the machine and then cutting the part.I am particularly interested in seeing the cutter plunge...

    Phillips bits

Lots of us use magnetic screwdriver bits and that particular problem just goes away.

    Phillips bits

I'm no fan of Philips heads but then I encounter very few.It gets more confusing if you play with Japanese motorcycles because they have JIS screws which look a lot like a Philips but aren't the same as.The whole topic can be quite confusing since lots of fastening companies have tried to...

    CNC machine or not?

Is it safe to assume your CNC doesn't have a vacuum clamping system?I tend to agree with the other comments but would still encourage people to learn what the strengths and weaknesses of CNC machining are.If for no other reason than making it easier to send sensible information out if seeking...

Shelving unit for my boat - looking for a bit of advice

Presumably the boat is afloat and you can't use a spirit level because just moving around tilts things.Unless the initial fit out was done by a cowboy, the chances are that the bulkheads and doorways will be plumb and the floor and built in furniture will be level.Your best bet is to make any...

    CNC machine or not?

As you have probably worked out,it is the way to get parts produced fairly quickly and with consistency. You may get a nasty surprise when you price up the hardware and software.First question;do you have any experience of CAD drawing? You really need to be quite adept as the old days of an...

    Hancock's Half Hour

Surely that wasn't a surprise.I well remember an elderly joiner telling me how disgusted he was about foreigners coming here and being treated by the NHS-the subtext was that he was contributing to the cost.He also believed that we wouldn't get treated in other countries, not that he had ever...
