    G-code question

I agree that much progress has been made in a short time. I believe a lot more could be made if you seek out a couple of good youtube tutorials for Vcarve. It is quite easy to create the entire programme and all you have to do with bcnc is establish the part datum and send the file. You may need...

    G-code question

If you have Vcarve, can you just use bcnc to transmit the Gcode? All you need to do is locate a compatible post processor from the large selection and the 3D visualisation in Vcarve will show you what the machine will do.Always run the visualisation until you reach the point where you can...

    G-code question

Is it possible that the stock is set up with the underside at z0? It is quite possible for a machine to work in such a configuration. Can you advise us of the material thickness abd the retract height you were expecting?I've never seen or used bcnc but I can understand Gcode.A 3D view of the part...

    wonder what this cost

That is one of the advantages of CNC work. With a half decent CAM system and correct geometry it only takes seconds to nest such an array of sheets and to determine how many sheets the project will take. With a pencil, square and rule, might we expect to mark out more than about five sheets a day?As...

Can someone recommend a decent outdoor polyurethane or varnish for my oak doors?

In the late 1990's a friend asked me much the same question about his oak front door.He was prevaricating between modern and fairly technical finishes or something traditional and I recommended Deks Olje D1 followed by D2.He went with it and it still looks good. Not exactly a cheap option but...

    wonder what this cost

You're not wrong! On the other hand, the thought of marking out and then cutting all those parts without a CNC router is pretty horrific.

Would a cheap hydraulic bottle jack be an easy way forward?

Difficulty finding a slotted stubby screwdriver with 10mm x 1.6mm blade

Doesn't everyone use the lever cap for that?

Isopon body filler - what a 'con' !

Its quite true you can buy a cheaper filler than P38 at retail prices.I would prefer it at trade price if possible but don't rate the budget filler very highly, they tend to be more porous and will absorb more moisture. It suffices for some jobs I suppose.

Basic set up required for newbie to cut small 3-4mm thick birch plywood

I would be more than a bit anxious about any hand held router with templates and a 5cm part.Have I overlooked anything? As for cost, one of the toy 3018 cnc routers might not be so far from the cost of a scrollsaw and will work away while other stuff is being done.A scrollsaw needs constant...

Basic set up required for newbie to cut small 3-4mm thick birch plywood

All the machines have advantages and disadvantages.Saws will leave fuzzy edges that need cleaning up,a laser will leave charred edges and tiny pieces on a CNC router don't always remain in place. The small sizes mentioned will make the use of a hand held router difficult. So what might be the...

    Tenon saw sharpen service

I've always sharpened my own saws, the problem these days is seeing the teeth on a fine saw.I did buy a pair of fairly powerful off the shelf glasses to help and to an extent they do.What does amuse me somewhat is mentioning the topic to others and almost always getting the reply "I don't have...

    The end of fluorescent lighting

I had a tube die a few months ago and bought an LED replacement from Screwfix, about a tenner. There was a part to replace the old starter and I am delighted with the switch. The new light comes on instantly, with none of the stuttering that afflicts some old fluorescents,as a bonus the light is...

    Freehand sharpening training

I don't give a rat's a**e about other peopl's cap iron settings because I know how to set mine,Please tell me where I can see a masochist obtaining a dozen or so full width shavings on oak or beech with a Stanley 4 1/2?

    Freehand sharpening training

I completely agree about full width shavings! I have said several times that I would love to watch somebody take a dozen or so full width shavings from a piece of beech or oak with a Stanley 4 1/2.Maybe if I went to the circus....... Slight switch of topic but I suspect the DIY boom mentioned...

    Freehand sharpening training

Marketing and doubt on the part of the hobbyists that don't have an experienced sidekick in the workshop to push their development.I knew one fellow who turned up fresh from college with a honing guide and the experienced bloke on the next bench threw it out of the door.Much later our former...

    This cutter....

Rotozip cutters in the small size are 1/8" shank, but I believe they are "only" tungsten carbide, which really doesn't like composite materials. The problem with those small carbide burrs is the extreme length/diameter ratio and even with very cautious feed rates they are unlikely to last...
