    Looking for a track saw

Happy to lend you £20 until payday. Then you can get one of these. I use them all the time. Just don’t overtighten the depth knob and it should last for years

    Stanley Block Plane ID

Can’t tell you anything about nomenclature but I can suggest a date. I started my apprenticeship on 1/12/1987. They drove me down to Carter Holt building supplies (NZ) and bought me about 15 tools which were deducted weekly from my wages. All of those have now been lost or stolen except my...

    Epoxy in the winter

You guys are rubbing it in a bit. I was born in NZ and grew up in both Oz and NZ. I have been in the UK for a decade and more and am now fully acclimatised to the weather here. When I am fitting my joinery work in customer’s houses over here I always look at what their central heating thermostat...

    SIP Dust Extractor 01954

Thanks for your advice on this. It just fitted in under the roof angle. I didn’t realise the on/off buttons where in such a weird place on this model. I would like to move them to somewhere more accessible so I can get the extractor tucked in next to the saw and still operate it easily. However...

    An interesting roof.

That looks terrific mate. I hope it is somewhere public where people can admire it.

How do you know you're getting old...

Well I’m bald, have a hearing aid, wear glasses for close up work and I have arthritis. But what really dates me is that the great bulk of my power tools have cords on them.

Getting a job in furniture making

Nothing is impossible I suppose but there is a good reason why a lot of well known furniture makers spend a large part of their time teaching and publishing. Wish I could remember the name of the book I read on holiday a few years ago by a US furniture maker. He kept opening workshops and...

Making the transition to freestanding kitchen cabinets

Hi, I usually make a few free standing kitchens each year in the post or hutch style described by Roy above. As you mentioned adjustable feet and the fact that you usually only deal with box carcass kitchens I just wanted to point out a difference between the two types of construction to keep...

    Securing Mortice & Tenon joints

You’re getting good advice above. Re. cutting the tenons you could make a jig and route them out. Cutting them by hand is very good practice though.

    An interesting roof.

They are great machines especially for curved work. Technically my old OHR is still my property I suppose but I imagine that the guy that rents my old workshop considers it his now after 7 years; although I’m sure he wouldn’t mind me using it if it is still running. My customer’s arent asking me...

    An interesting roof.

I left my OHR behind when I moved workshops in 2015 as it was only getting used about once a year and I wanted more space. It is paying off for you here though. You couldn’t do the last 2 of the 45 degree passes with a spindle moulder. Thanks for the video.

Cooling chisel or plane blade when sharpening

I was an apprentice-boy in New Zealand in the 1980s. Back in those unionised days we were allocated 1/2 an hour a week for saw and chisel sharpening which new apprentices were encouraged to take to learn to sharpen their own gear. Right at the beginning of my time my most important job was...

    Compressor Hose Advice

Sorry I missed the post by Alan when I wrote the above. I think we are talking about the same product.

    Compressor Hose Advice

Yea. Hate those pre coiled telephone cable things. I have a 5m black line that I got from Machinemart. Not sure what it is made of but it feels a bit rubberised and is easy to coil and doesn’t have a memory of the shape it was last coiled into if that makes sense. It is a little heavy duty but...

    An interesting roof.

Great work mate. I did a very similar job to this in oak about 20 years ago and remember how challenging it was to get the neat joints with the heavy framing members working on my own. In fact yours is even harder than the one I did as the central boss/filial where the four hips met wasn’t...

What's the biggest mistake you have made in your woodworking

Surely every joiner has done something like this at least once. I have. For me the danger is measuring up and talking to the customer at the same time.

    hotmail access blocked

From memory when this happened to me I could never get through to anyone and just had to give up on my account. I may be remembering this wrong as it was about 10 years ago that I ‘sold’ all those handbags. The UK support phone number is above.

    which Router

There are only a few examples of power tools where I don’t choose makita over all others. I do have a makita 1/4 inch router but the 1/2 inch I like best is the Dewalt 625. I use it mostly by hand as I don’t use the router table that much as I prefer using the spindle moulder for this type of...

    Bought another geetar!!

You have my sympathy mate. I have had to stop playing the guitar due to arthritis. Even a simple barre 5th chord using only 2 fingers is painful.

    hotmail access blocked

When this happened to me someone in China had taken over both my hotmail and my ebay account and was selling nonexistent £200 handbags to people on the strength of my 100% ebay feebdack. So check out your other online profiles especially if they have the same password as your hotmail.
