    Mesmerising

I put a woodburner into my home about 8 years ago and became an instant old man; well in the winter anyway. My joinery shop is only a minutes walk from the house. I often go back down to work after dinner at night for a few hours to write quotes, do glue-ups or just generally try to get work...

    Hi From Scotland

I like the big plate and balls mate. Keep watching those qualified guys and asking a lot of questions. It’s the best way to learn your trade. PS. Take your PPE really seriously too or you may end up like me with hearing aids.

    Help needed designing honours board

I have made two of these over the years; both for lawn bowls clubs. The most recent one was French oak with black painted lettering. This one looked really good and they were really pleased. The second one was so long ago now I don’t remember what species it was but I probably glued up some...

    Asbestos disposal

When I was a 17 year old apprentice boy my boss got a maintenance contract for social housing. We mostly just made replacement kitchens and doors for these houses. But in 1988 I was sent out in the ute for a couple of days to drill holes with a holesaw in the asbestos soffit boards immediately...

    Collated 1st fix nails

I have used Firmahold brand from Tradedfixdirect before. Cheaper than paslode but they tend to jam my gun more often. Take note that I don’t do a lot of this sort of work and when I do I am dragging an airline around with a 15 year old gun that has been dropped off a few rooves over the years...

    Asbestos disposal

While I was writing my reply Artie above posted about free asbestos removal. as I understand it, where I live in Essex you can get up to 40kg removed for free from your own household. If you are a business like me I don’t think this applies. Please feel free to correct me of I’m wrong and I will...

    Asbestos disposal

I had a painful experience on one of my first jobs when I set up work here in the UK. I was constantly making the same mistake at this point. This can be summed up as presuming that materials/procedures/legislations/customers were the same as my country of origin without actually checking on...

    Help finding manual.

Hi. You may know this but these machines are called ‘combination machines’ so this may help you in a google search. Also the few AEG combi machines that I have seen are branded 2100 not 2000. Maybe have a look at these online and see if its the same machine.

Moving workshop/transporting machines - any tips??

Listen to pete. Forget dollies. Pallets and a truck for them. Especially if its a long drive.

How to use this old wire fence tensioner? All the gear and no idea!

Yea. you do need the chain with that one. The Hayes company from NZ patented one that allows you to use your fencing wire offcuts as the anchor instead of chain in the early 20C. Here a picture of it in action tightening some barbed wire. I wrote a short paragraph about my favourite NZ fencer...

Found Sliding table for 01332 saw

I’m not sure if you are after a new one or a second hand one. New ones are sold here…

    SIP 10” saw £270

Thats a very good price and it looks in good condition. I recently sold one that was having problems and wasn’t really running for the same price. They are good saws. I think I got about 20,000 hours from new out of that saw before it started playing up. I liked it more than the Axminster Harvey...

    Lie Nielsen tools

Just noticed you live in Petone. Great little place with some great old timber houses. I once moved a colonial weatherboard house from Petone up to the Kapiti Coast in the mid 90s. Cost the owner a fortune as the house carrying trucks were so wide he had to pay to get some roads closed as no one...

    What wood for shaker doors?

I have tulipwood cabinets in the work van for the over head cabinets and steamed beech with sapele panels for the lower ones. The van is black and gets very hot inside in summer. I can’t actually remember making them now but I would have been careful with grain selection. The tulipwood has...

Dewalt Radial Arm Saw DW 720

FYI. These are amazing machines. I’ve never seen one in a joinery shop in the UK but they had one in the company I did my time with in NZ: maybe they don’t meet the safety regs here? Someone will know. Anyway, you can cut compound bevels with them like a modern dropsaw but you can also rip...

    Looking for a track saw

I believe that this price only includes one rail. The second one is another 60 odd quid. If he wants a second one it may pay to save up as I bought a 3 m one for about £100 a few years back and have never regretted it.

A labour of love - restoring old woodblock parquet

Nice job but wish this thread was about 5 years ago so that I could have pointed it out to the guy I quoted to do the same job as you have just done in his ground floor. He rang me up and more or less told me I was a criminal quoting back to me the labour price. I had a bit of solace a few years...

    Removing cork tiles.

Above advice is good. If the adhesive is weak a flat spade is the quickest way. However, sods law says you’ll probably need the scraper.
