    Storing kiln-dried oak outside

Jones’ advice is good. Chances are your timber has been stored in some sort of open air but roofed shed or similar since it has been kilned anyway. Let the air get at it but keep the moisture off if you can’t keep it indoors.

    Table levelling feet fixings

Good advice above. When I took over my workshop there was a gorilla bucket filled with the following in the corner They probably are a bit tall for a workbench but as I also have an uneven floor I have them underneath the table saw and jointer infeed and outfeed tables and and in a few other...

    Glass for van windows

Hi Jacob, I have always made furniture for my work vans to become campers for a couple of weeks each summer. In the past I have bought and fitted glass first for a t4 transporter and then a t5 transporter off this company who also make glass for most makes of van...

    Advice on spindle moulder purchase

I accidentally made this second post and I have nothing extra to say and can’t figure out how to delete it. So sorry and listen to Motörhead.

    Advice on spindle moulder purchase

I just went on google briefly and that axminster course I mentioned was being offered right up until the start of covid and I can’t tell if it has been started up again yet. So I’d just ring them. I would look into this as it seems to me all that you are lacking is confidence. It sounds like you...

    Advice on spindle moulder purchase

If you are worried I know that Axminster used to run a one day class on the spindle moulder. A young guy that used to work for me a while back had done it just before we met and he said it increased his confidence as this machine had made him nervous too and he had avoided using it at his...

    Table saw blades

Lock out drawer slides or DIY mechanism

I use those heavy slides all the time when making large pull out cabinets for under stairs and other heavy drawers. At least with the 700mm ones, which I use the most, there is about 5mm of play when they are fully extended. No problem for this kind of application but that is not a very stable...

    Oak door

I probably make between 5 and 10 front doors for customers each year. I use kiln dried timber which I buy from the timber merchant to begin milling and joining that same day and haven’t had any problems. I used to make them predominantly of oak but over the past few years I have been...

    Rutlands 18v trim router

First I need to admit I like makita. I have built a whole career out of using makita gear. I even have corded makita gear that I bought 2nd hand in 1987 while still an apprentice that is still going strong; in particular a 9 1/4” saw and a 1/4” router that have done hundreds of hours of work...

Mystery tool again turning chisel ?

I just put ‘flared slick’ into google images. Lots of pictures like this one from a speciality tool maker for log building and timber framing in the US. They have cut the handle length out when cropping the photos.

Mystery tool again turning chisel ?

At first sight it is a carpenter’s flared slick chisel as it is the right shape; in plan view anyway. Only time I used one a lot was in the early 90s when me and my old partner built a large log cabin in New Zealand. Slicks are used for paring with the grain on irregular shaped timber; for...

    Axminster Planer Thicknesser Issue

Yea. That’s the way I do it too. What I can never work out though is why sometimes when I change the blades I can swap all three and get it setup sweat in 15 minutes and other times it can take 3 times as long. Changing jointer blades definitely has an X factor.

Just got my annual workshop insurance bill.

Hi, Just got my annual insurance bill for my workshop. It seems a bit steep to me and I would be interested to know what other professionals think. Especially those who run a similar sort of business to me. Does this price sound realistic to you guys? First of all I should admit that I never...

    OSMO PERHAPS?

I have been using Osmo on hardwood kitchen worktops and dining tables for over a decade and have never had a problem or callback. It is a great product. Far superior to rubbing oils for these types of applications in my opinion. The thing I like the most about this product is that I am...

DW745 bench saw suddenly stopped working during cutting

Is the width of that groove in the armature about the same as the width of the brushes? I only ask as that looks like the condition of the armature in my dropsaw when I was having the same problem as you? I replaced it a few years back. No problems since.
