    Lathe Upgrade Brand Advice

VB36 I used my trusty Axi Ml900 for 20 years, eventually saved and got the VB green monster, its quirky but what a machine, will turn up to 5`9" with the long bed removed and is a smooth and stable as you will get. The downside is they are expensive (too expensive new) and a rarity second hand...

    Planner Thicknesser

I must have had mine double the time of your good self, apart from sharpening and an adjustment after a move mine is going strong, as above I would be miffed after a short life as described even with a lack of TLC - surely if the machine is suitable for your needs it is worth a repair? Stuart

    VB36 Vibrations

Thanks for all the advice, I checked all the relevant grub screws and bolts with nothing amiss, so I gave all the pulleys a good clean with a bronze brush and readjusted the thrust bearings and gave them another squirt of grease, something worked as it all appears smooth again now. Stuart

Pretty darn good for a new user, they look well matched which isn't an easy ask. Well done.

    More (yawn) bandsaw questions...

In my experience you will be very luck to get a blade that cuts parallel to the fence or the table, and as stated above when you change the blade the next will be out. Get the wheels coplanar tracked ie in line with a straight edge top to bottom, the blade will track itself to the best spot...

Worth a google as it is a beast with huge capacity and a reputation for very very smooth running

    VB36 Vibrations

Everything appears tight and even, I reset the thrust bearings and they were lubricated last week, I cannot see anything obvious and the vibration is subtle but definitely there, shaft run smoothly no obvious failings.

    Paint gun & compressor suggestions/advice

Go for a relatively cheap airbrush as on box size projects the fine detailing ability is irrelevant, I started with something similar to the below, worked fine on larger areas. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dual-Action- ... 3134438168

    VB36 Vibrations

Ok, so I have never had this before, I have a small vibration appeared on the VB, I have taken the chuck off in case it was that, still there. I have run the motor without the belts on, not there so I guess that rules out the motor. Bearings adjusted and lubed, still there, belts appear ok not...

    Paint gun & compressor suggestions/advice

I too run Iwata, however if you are not doing very fine detail the Chinese copies can work very well. If you have no need for the compressor to do anything else, then again the cheaper ones work fine for home use. If you plan to run other air tools or use the compressor for anything else you can...

    Hello and please educate me!

Most branded lathes will be well matched with their capacity to speed to motor size, it will depend on your needs, always worth trying a couple if you can first, if their is a local club they and the members will have various models and sizes to try.

    Paint gun & compressor suggestions/advice

If its for smaller items, consider a small compressor and airbrush, less space, waste and cost.

    Hello and please educate me!

Don't forget it is not just the lathe, tools, sharpening, chuck etc. Look for a second hand bundle, you should get most of what you need all together. WARNING- Its addictive!

    New bandsaw: setup and expectations

Mark Duginske is the band saw guru, his book is brilliant, Google may show some videos to, once you understand about tracking, correct blade and guides the band saw is the best tool in the shop, but, like most things has to be set up correctly. as said good quality blades are a must.

vb36 vacuum chuck and rotary adaptor

I have been using this a lot of the last week or so due to turning a batch of spheres I don't know how I managed without it, so quick and simple to turn the spheres on multi axis for sanding and final turning. Thoroughly recommend to anyone who has a need and simple to construct, suitable pumps...

    Red Mallea Burl

I have used this timber on several projects and have found Danish oil a perfect finish, wax gets caught in the fissures and can look pretty rough. Danish oil came up with a nice sheen and of course could be buffed for higher gloss finish, the wood darkened a little it was the exterior (bark...
