    Bench Saw

I don't mind a bit of fettling or setting up, my main concern is that many of the new saws have poor quality materials and are just not fit for purpose.

    Bench Saw

That's a lot of work to bring a new saw up to spec. And that's the issue I have with most of the Chinese type hobby saws, great writ up though. Just too much faff to bring a saw to a useable standard in my opinion.

    Bench Saw

Ok so after 20 plus years without one I am getting the urge to spend. I have always used a bandsaw as most of my cutting was for turning, now getting the need for a compact but accurate sawbench. So many of the reviews for 10" saws are pretty derogatory on build quality and accuracy I am at a...

    Scheppach tiger 2000

Is this for turning chisels or plane irons hand chisels etc? If for turning I have always used a Creusen slow speed grinder and white wheels, super sharp, super quick, anything else just takes too long.

    quick question

I had the Axminster M900 with a swiveling head stock, I found that it was a balance between clearing the bed bars and the reach of the tool rest. I would say though to turn a sink sized object on your lathe may be problematic, as that will be a fair chunk of timber for the lathe to handle. I use...

I have been making pens on and off for twenty years on the lathe and have yet to use any sort of measuring device due to the bushes and mandrel used, have I been missing something?

    Whats this drill bit called?

Try contacting your local wood turners, most are very helpful and sure they could make a decent job.

Wood turning lathe power feed or manual if that's a thing

A copy lathe or attachment is the only thing I can think of, but as above I cannot see the benefit. People do use metal lathes for wood but I think it would be very slow and limiting, if you consider the continuous and subtle changes we make to tool presentation a machine would never reproduce...

    Black streak in pippy oak

Tell him it is the staining from a musket ball embedded many years ago, a bit of provenance always helps!!!!!!

    not the greatest first post!

Neil - Hope your on the mend, looks painful that!!!!! With respect as a new turner I would take it slow and easy, winged hollow forms are fairly advanced and certainly not something to take on lightly. Glad you "walked away" albeit with a bill for repairs. don't let it put you off though!

Advice needed on how to make this knot look good please

Easy composites water clear polyester resin, tinted a nice dark blue. Put a wall of hot glue around the hole and slightly over fill, sand back through the grits and polish to finish. Look up "river tables" on you tube, there are some stunning examples.

    Tips & Tricks

I use lubricating wax on all steel surfaces and my tools and chucks to keep rust at bay over the damp months, coupled with a cheap second hand de humidifier, workshop stays damp and rust free. Cheap second hand curtains from a charity shop easily hung around work space again to catch chips and...

    Work Shop Insurance

I can see this is going to be a big problem, I, like many others have collected my tools and equipment over many years and don't have receipts, my lathe alone would be £8K to replace with the chucks etc., add on all the other tools machinery and equipment it is a wake up call as to the cost of...

    Work Shop Insurance

Ok looking around my shop last night and realized just how much monies worth of kit a caboodle I have accumulated over the years. Whilst I have general house insurance (Rented property) I think this would be woefully inadequate if the worst happened. Can anyone advise a good insurance company...

    Lathe Upgrade Brand Advice

I would avoid any of the Chinese type the better Axi lathes, any of the older established brands, a graduate would "do you proud" cant help on the threads but are very popular and easy to get parts and accessories for. If you already have chucks etc just an adaptor back plate will do.
