    If you have a small router consider mounting it in a drill press stand and use as an overhead router. I did this for a simple job many years ago and still use it regularly, a simple MDF table and fence makes it very versatile

    As said a very oily and awkward wood to use with hand tools, I think I would get a more suitable timber for this project, it may save a lot or work then swearing as it moves and warps, as said above lovely to turn I would leave it for that. Sorry!

    Have you a spare length you could experiment with heat and time exposed etc. I know exhausts can take on that hue but I think a bit of experimentation may assist.

    Just has a run in with a domestic plumber loads of grief and the final straw was when he invoiced me with labour at £81 per hour. And taps which anyone could get from screwfix for £40 charged at £125 Needless to say I paid what was quoted not invoiced!!!!!!

    The O`Donnell jaws with several inserts are a brilliant and versatile set, I use these most as by changing the insert covers most sizes you will require.

    There are a myriad of hand cut joints and simple jointing aids - pocket hole is a good example, I cant picture what you are trying to make, perhaps a googled image of something similar may assist with suggestions?
