While there is a place for made tools - usually special or one off applications I would advocate the basic gouges from a reputable manufacturer. My Sorby 3/8 bowl gouge is just about worn out, that took me 10 years of fairly regular useage. That is a good quality tool returning excellent value...

As a wood turner I am sharpening all the time staright from grinder to lathe, never used a hone or strop, fast repeatable grinds and a super smooth finish on the timber.

how about an Aircap, I have used one for years, very comfy and easy to wear.

The lever shown in your pictures turns the feed roller on and off for thicknessing has no other function.

The tool posts Versa chuck is a great bit of kit and can take carriers to suit different manufacturers jaws and again has a changeable back plate - I also have the Axminster super precision chuck, unfortunately no longer made and the versa chuck is on par with this at a fraction of the cost.

Nothing special about the blanks, your paying for someone else to source cut dry and display, try looking in woodland (with permission) lots of wind fall branches and if you have the means trunks to. I use a chainsaw mill to produce mine from all sizes of trees...
