    Collector anonymous

Users are a pox on old tools. Users wear down, b ugger, break, and otherwise slowly destroy a finite resource, denying it to future generations. And they whine when the old tools become rarer and more expensive. Collectors nurture their old tools, investigate the origins of each tool and its...

    1902 Stanley 41/2.

"the low front knob (a little loose) " If the steel post is a bit too long and bottoms out before the knob is held tight (the usual suspect), then the easy "fix" is to shorten the steel post by cutting/grinding a little off the end

    unusual mortise gauge. identity ?

Re online searches, A National Archives search can give some clues to old UK registered designs, http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.u ... 00&_st=adv (as Don notes; you have to search for both mortice and mortise spellings) But only the brief title description is available online at NA, and...

    unusual mortise gauge. identity ?

Thanks for all the research help, turning up enticing clues. Copying the most expensive style of mortise gauge might have been tempting. I wonder if my gauge doesn't have a maker's mark because they didn't want to be easily traced and charged with copyright infringement. . Very interesting.

    unusual mortise gauge. identity ?

Andy, Thanks for looking. I'm thinking its likely a British made gauge with its traditional set screws instead of wing nuts (It's a pity the old UK patents and registered designs from the 1800s aren't as easily searched as US patents) And yes, I have a hat load of other marking gauges I can...

    unusual mortise gauge. identity ?

This mortise gauge turned up at a local auction this weekend. Does anyone know who produced it ?? It has an unusual gear rack adjusting system that I haven't seen before; one side of the head has a screw which turns an internal cog which travels along the toothed track in the stem to adjust the...

    B&B (?) tools

I'd say its the economy version. Looks like a quick and cheap attachment method; just slide the crank arm into the hole in the chuck shaft, and pin it in place

    B&B (?) tools

They're everywhere ! Even in Ontario. Found one today while going through an auction lot that I got at last Saturday's estate auction. It looks similar style to Geoff's, except its a non-ratcheting version (spring alligator jaws in chuck)

    Belgian Mechanical Hammer

Mine has the rare and desirable breast drill type extension, the favoured configuration for small boys (and playful bigger boys). I haven't tried putting it through the airport x-ray baggage check....yet

Marples Beech, Brass & Ebony Brace

My Henry Brown plated brace is slightly more damaged than Rhyolith's All brass screws for the plating (a steel screw to hold the chuck). Missing some plating and the chuck button, screwed & glued, but still pretty enough for keepers and to admire the original workmanship.

Thewlis pincers - and a bit of Thewlis history.

Tower pincers with claw and ball ends, and Lancashire pincers (with claw and cone ends), as shown in the S Tyzack & Son catalogue No 640 (c1938) I've no idea of the manufacturer's purpose of the ball or cone, but I've assumed Owner's choice; and the ball is for bonking, and the cone is for poking.

Huge Brass Foot Pump, The Kismet Duplex Garage

Rhyolith, Grace's Guide has some good information on the company history, and shows about twenty different old company adverts dating from 1923-1956. The Kismet "Garage" pump is listed in the 1927 ad. The other pump models listed in this advert are the "Junior", the "Duplex", and the...

Can anyone give me some idea of what this saw is?

logging saw it is. one-man crosscut useful for cutting your wood into fireplace length bits It's missing its helper handle (fits into the hole in the top of the saw plate, at the handle end for two handed one-man use, or at the toe to make it a two-man saw if you have a helper) They're fairly...
