    A bit more progress today on the second cookie cut ….after 2 coats of resin its now had a coat of hard wax oil then sanded to 1500 grit . here it as after the second coat of oil

    Bow ties fitted (a 5 deg back cut on the base of each one aids fitting ) then levelled with a small block plane prior to sanding down to 120 grit finally 80g of epoxy resin applied to seal the grain and glue up some of the smaller fissures looking at some of these cracks I think it will...

    Lovely sunny day here so the outside ‘workshop’ is a pleasure to be in. Spent the last couple of hours cutting the bow ties out of the yellow balau offcuts then routing out the pockets

    True but a lot simpler to sort than obtain a crane scales etc …let alone the cost too. If it was +/- 1kg accurate then that would be 10Kg error ….in 250 Kg for a replica setup I’d be happy with that

    By using a lever with a 10:1 ratio to pull down on a centrally mounted rope on the draw chord you could measure up to 250kg effective force with a 25Kg spring balance

    After lots of sanding and use of the hard wax oil here is the finished board ….a couple more coats of wax yet then I’ll sort the hairpin legs

    What woodworking did you do today?

    Been sanding down my 22mm thick burr maple slab ….. small bow tie on a crack at one end then two coats of hard wax oil after sanding down to 400 grit.

    Wire wool between coats (Tung)

    I’ve had great results with the Oli Natura hard wax oil - 4 coats flatting off in between…going up the grit grade’s finally finishing off with 2000 grit and then 0000 wire wool prior to waxing - super silk finish.

    took it up to 120 grit at lunchtime and applied a thin coat of epoxy resin to fill in the small burr holes etc

    You could use that method to cut out the bow tie pockets. Yes scribed around each bow tie to firm the pockets. Once you have cut the bow ties you chamfer the bottom edges to help them fit into the pockets and have a mix of glue on fine dust from the bow tie wood to fill any gaps. Leave the...

    I would cut two cookie slabs from it ….matching coffee tables after milking them flat & hours if surface prep etc 😁

    Just milled flat a piece of burr maple still at 80 grit and after a quick wipe with white spirit to reveal the burrs etc

    Beads on the outside would be a security issue as they could be easily prized out and allow the glass to be removed
