Take it down to 2000 grit ‘sandpape’ with a wipe over finish inbetween and you’ll get an amazing finish.

After the 1st heavy coat, I leave the next coat for 5 mins or so then wipe off any excess with a clean cloth. Always get a smooth finish apart from once when a strong wind circulated some sawdust around 😩. on my tables I work down to over 1000 grit with all coats applied with a cloth

A tabbed washer will only work if there is a corresponding flat on the shaft to fix the washer too. Maybe a spring or shake proof washer would be better

I’ve had good results with the Mikes Magic mix I found on here. One 1/3rd pure tung oil, white spirit, satin outdoor varnish - to enhance the grain even more add in some pure linseed oil too.

It’s a very very unpleasant experience ….was a lab trick 50 years ago to put some in your mug of tea ….totally taste & odourless….but the gut spasms it causes are horrid and violent ejection of your bowel contents In tablet form it’s 1mg ….so imagine what a squirt from an eye dropper does...

The dye used is methyl violet ….it’s an irritant which if ingested would make you vomit….thus reducing potential methanol poisoning. Phenolthalain as you state is an acid-alkali indicator …..not poisonous but it an extremely powerful laxative !!!!

I’ve been using the three part mix of tung oil/ exterior satin varnish / white spirit to good effect though ive not thoroughly tested it for good water resistance. A high proportion of the varnish would increase that though.

Wall drive would be hex socket …..the exact shape of the hex nut. Most std sockets are bi hex - star shaped which only contact the edges of each side. The total drive idea is to vary the pitch of the bi hex so you get AF & others in one socket
