    Finish for chopping boards

Heaven help me! but I use SKYDD is one of those products from the Swedish furniture manufacturer (there I've said it). It is just mineral oil and works well, keeps most stains at bay if you apply as instructed been using it for years on chopping boards and tabletops.

    Smart tv

Our new Samsung QE50Q60TA. 50" turned up on time carried by staff from the local shop, who under normal circumstances will set it up for you (for a fee). Took a while sorting out the cables from the old TV and the peripherals. The scart has disappeared but made up for with the HDMI's. The Teac...

    Wanted Inca Euro 260 Bandsaw

I am interested in buying one of these bandsaws. I have been looking for a while and have missed out on two listings recently on eBay. I only have a garage as a workshop with few tools other than hand tools and a small table saw. I manage by having the woodyard do all my cutting to approximate...

    Inca bandsaw

Thanks Droogs. I did try but apparently I don't have sufficient privileges. I don't have enough posts to sell but I thought I had enough to put in a wanted ad in. Then I got waylaid as I had a call to say my Western Red Cedar was ready at the woodyard. So off I went.

    Smart tv

I have just been through this process and the TV arrives tomorrow. The first thing I checked out was the size. I initially thought of a 55" but it proved too large for the space. So opted for a 50" This considerably reduced my choice as 55" seems very popular. Then it was down to connectivity...

    Inca bandsaw

I have been trying to find an INCA bandsaw, for the last three months. I missed out on two on EBAY recently. So I might as well ask if anyone relishes the idea of selling one? I thought I would ask. Malcolm

Cedar strip canoe - moving swiftly on

I have attached a page of Glasplies advice Paragraphs 6 to 11 apply. I would add that the process of wetting the hull before applying the tissue will give you an indication of the amount you need. If you're under at this stage it is less of a problem. I use scales to measure ratio by weight...

Cedar strip canoe - moving swiftly on

Hi Dan, Really good project, sharing it with your dad is wonderful. I have been building boats since I was 15 starting with a Bell Woodworkings Mirror dinghy kit. I never really had the space or the tools to really relish my goal but you have to adapt. I was fortunate to know a pioneer in glass...

Red Cedar Linen Box - Finish

Thank you for that, now I know IPA is not beer but what is it? Would you use the same finish on the outside. I presume the sanding sealer just holds the fibres together?

Red Cedar Linen Box - Finish

Apologies if you have seen this before but I posted it the general section previously as I forgot where I was! Bit of advice on finishing (even though the wood has not arrived yet). Eventually found a reasonable source of Western Red Cedar. I am waiting for it to be roughly planed and squared...

Linen Chest/Banket Box in Red Cedar

Yes, lots of wet stuff about, its difficult to find quality Red Cedar locally but managed it. Was able to select it as well.

Linen Chest/Banket Box in Red Cedar

Bit of advice on finishing (even though the wood has not arrived yet). Eventually found a reasonable source of Western Red Cedar. I am waiting for it to be roughly planed and squared off( I know I will have to take the hand plane to it later). It will be a simple box with base and lid. I chose...

    Going rate for foreman

Try and look at this from "your friends" point of view. You are asking him to work for less (£150 a day times five is £750 a week times 52 weeks a year which is 39,000 ) and giving him more resposibility. Although you say the foreman job isn't difficult, he might think it is, we often forget...

UK & Ireland TIMBER YARDS - PLEASE Add Your Favourites

Hi Illy You are right they have said that to me. They think they don't make any profit from selling to hobbyist's. I just tend to ignore it, as I struggle to find anyone else close to me. I am waiting for about 50 running feet of Western Red Cedar. I only want it square and planed. Its just a...

UK & Ireland TIMBER YARDS - PLEASE Add Your Favourites

Hello, One to add for the Northwest as they seem a little under represented. Houghton Timber High Walton Mill nr Preston Lancashire PR5 4DG 01772 323566 They have two premises and are trying to arrange one of them to be the store and the other the workshop so at the moment a tad disorganised...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Unfortunately the drawers are just plain redwood and I hesitate to say they are joined with pocket hole screws and glue. Next time I will make them with dovetails. The Elm planks finish well but are difficult to work with grain all over the place.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Here is my contribution. My wife needed a hall or console table and this is what I came up with. The wood is all elm, except for the drawer sides and runners. It is my third piece of furniture and I was looking to match the grain. What I have learned so far is that a beautiful piece of wood...

"Off the shelf" vs DIY workbenches

As Previously mentioned, take a look at Rob Cosman's $100 bench. All the wood is available and can be made using few tools and little experience. The method of construction is really simple yet provides a very strong bench. As it uses plywood and MDF its not as pretty as some others. I...

    Millers Falls 806 bench grinder

Thanks again sideways. I have found a switch which is for domestic voltage and rated for a 1/3 hp motor DPST so I will order it as well as a wago connector (may have to buy a few. Have now stripped back the cable from the motor some of the tape was the old cloth type. I have hit a bit of a snag...

    Millers Falls 806 bench grinder

Thank you both I could have saved myself some trouble and just retwired the grinder without reinstating the switch. As it is an American product most of the info I can find indicates American wiring techniques. I would have taken the old wiring back to good stuff or all the way to the motor if I...
