Moving from Devon to SW Scotland

Lived first five decades of my life in various parts of south from Kent to Cornwall. Met a lass in 2018 and moved to Kilmarnock in 2018. Best life move ever. Town centre is a bit ***** (post-industrial pawn shops) but love the people who are funny and welcoming. Bought a place with an old...

    Withdrawn s/h Quangsheng 62 with 25, 38 and 50 deg irons

Hi, selling here because I've gained a lot from the Boards over the past years. I want to love this plane but just don't like the adjustment mechanism. Used mainly as shooter with 25 deg blade. 38 deg blade never used. Front tote is loose from brass mechanism and will need fettling but I...

Seloron Deluxe Brace - where to obtain 4-jaw chuck

Hopefully this can be quickly answered. I've bought a second-hand one of these with a 3-jaw chuck. https://www.seloron.fr/outillage-a-main/vilebrequins-a-main-super-pro-deluxe/?lang=en I'd like to replace the chuck with a 4-jaw version so I can use jennings auger bits (I like the ones from...

    Timber framing engineering

I’m Ayrshire and there’s a surprising dearth of sawmills that I know of.

    Timber framing engineering

Thank you for all the replies so far inc Ed & Terry. I'm doing this for pleasure and for learning. It is replacing a metal meccano shed that stood well for 4 years until the Ayrshire storms blew the ruddy doors off. I don't want to go near stud/stick. My main hobby is furniture making with hand...

    Timber framing engineering

I'm about to design and build a small 8'x10' timber-framed cycle shed with pent roof. I'm using 4" spruce posts despite having read about the potential for spruce to twist and that timber framing, proper, is defined as joinery in 5" or larger posts. However, since the only person likely to get...

    Passwords

The newspaper I read had an article in summer 2022 about password managers and the crackability of most people's online life. It shook me out of my complacency and I signed up for a password manager (Lastpass) that I could use across Mac and Windows platforms. It took me three solid days to...

Advice on multifunction 13A sockets - will I burn down the family home?

I have a dual socket that has plugged into it a shaver adaptor to power a foreign lamp and various combinations of USB charging. I was thinking of buying a 13A multifunction socket from Amazon (can take UK 3-pin, 2 pin shaver, USB etc) but notice that reputable sellers like BG don't have...

Finally signed up! Hello from Glasgow

I’m in Kilmarnock and interested in the idea of the communal workshop. Can you say more and would you like bunch of cast-off narex chisels that I’ve replaced with newer Ashley Iles?

    Resawing 12" wide hardwood

I ordered mine from Dieter in Germany. 4-5 days shipping usually (I’m in W. Scotland). I had placed an order directly with Blackburn but it was going to take months to be fulfilled.

Proof that end grain joints are stronger than side-grain joints

On a more logical note, you cannot prove with a piece of evidence. You can only contribute evidence that counts as a fact towards a claim given sufficient warrants and absence of counter-examples. You can however, falsify with one piece of evidence (see Popper's work on science and falsification).

    Heating a workshop

I’m not sure if ‘re-igniting’ this thread is good form or not. I’m persuaded of the oil-filled radiator approach for my tiny shop. 8.10’. I’m in Scotland and the shop is well-ventilated (see roof pics attached) and I wonder if there’s any point to radiator as I imagine I’d lose all the heat or...

    Cappuccino machine

+1 for Hoffman videos. rule of thumb is that you’re better off spending more on your grinder than your boiler. We bought a Sage / Berville barista pro last Christmas for £500. Integrated grinder is only so-so and with repairers. now wish I’d bought a Sage bambino and eureka mignon for the same...
