    computer web site problem

If all you do is browse the internet from it get a chromebook. Cheaper than a windows machine and Google will auto update it to keep it relatively safe. I’d be wary of entering any payment details or account passwords into a machine still running vista and connected to the internet. I’d...

    G-Plan Table refurb.

Judging by Ian’s post sanding is the way to go- I’d be chuffed with that result from the before pic. I grew up with one of these tables and had the chore of wax polishing it which always seemed a pointless task as it had a table cloth over it for most of its life....

Insulating garage roof- heat and sound

I was planning to partition off an internal “room” that can be used for welding and grinding etc to keep the mess out of the rest of the workshop and have decent extraction in. It would limit the size of anything I can tinker with in there but would stop showers of sparks - both from a fire...

Secret Santa 2019 - thanks, everyone.

Can’t make anything as the workshop isn’t finished, so if it’s ok to buy then count me in. Cheers, Tom

SEnsible / safe heating for workshop (aka the garage)

Interesting thread as I’m looking at this at the moment too. I’m considering adding some of these panels to mine. They work by heating things rather than air, don’t have any glowing elements, and seem to use little electricity. Mounting them overhead where I’ll be working keeps them out of the...

    bread board finish

If you’re just using for bread no need for a finish. For a general purpose board I soak in mineral oil and then use a home brew mix of beeswax and mineral oil. Once the surface gets scored up, I’ll scrape it smooth, reoil then rewax.

Insulating garage roof- heat and sound

Haha, I did suggest when the workshop was being demolished that everything could be moved into the house for safe keeping but was given short shrift. Kitchen is arriving 2nd December, and I’m keen for everything in the house to be more or less done before then. I was getting twitchy not...

Insulating garage roof- heat and sound

Cheers for the thoughts, no plan to use loft space, it’s barely accessible due to the amount of struts supporting the rafters. Sounding like mineral wool on top of the ceiling is going to be the best option for sound and warmth. Hopefully will be finished by Christmas, apparently it’s more...

Insulating garage roof- heat and sound

Hi, workshop build is progressing, timbers are up with a membrane cover waiting for roofer to come and tile Thinking about insulation, what’s going to be best - celotex type up at the pitch or loft roll on top of the ceiling, or both? Roof is looking like this: Plan is to board over to...

Yet another “What wood is this”... sorry!

My first thought was a rosewood I’d be surprised if the second was sycamore/maple due to the bark

    Starting to work with metal?

I’ve just started an NVQ in welding and fabrication at coleg gwent in Newport. 6-9 every Monday evening with a very well kitted out workshop. First week was this week so not much missed if he wanted to sign up ( Newport isn’t too far from Cowbridge- I get the train from Cardiff to Newport then...

    Making planes - cautionary tale

Have you tried one? The one I tried was great in hot weather as it’s like having a fan blow on your face the whole time, very cooling. I’m saving for one of my own, as now I’ve tried it everything else just isn’t as good

    Workbench top?

Thickness of door affects its fire rating too, pretty sure I’ve read a rough rule of thumb that normal doors are about 35mm, 30 min doors are 45mm and 60min doors are 55mm As such a really heavy one may be due it being specced to resist fire for longer. I was planning laminated MDF for my bench...

What's wrong with my laptop keyboard?

My old one developed a dodgy connection that did this. Being a work machine I replaced it as wasn’t worth the hassle to fix. On most touch pads you can double tap top left to disable it, and I had to do that anytime I wasn’t using a separate keyboard/mouse

    Best British Cheeses

Truffled Gloucester is really good, slightly creamy and well flavoured Cornish Kern if you like a firm cheese, reminiscent of an aged Comte but with a sweeter flavour Perl wen for a soft Brie like cheese Beauvale is a really good creamy blue, similar to a Gorgonzola Sheep rustler is also...
